DIY Oil Change, 2010+ DFI 3.8L Turbocharged Engine, M97 9A1

Oil drain plug M18 X 1.5, replace sealing ring, 37 ft/lb
Oil filter cover, replace gasket, 19 ft/lb
Oil volume during oil change 7.5L
Oil volume during new engine build 10.4L

1. Pull out telescopic oil filler tube
2. Clean filler tube with clean cloth
3. Loosen oil filter cover counter clockwise

Once you have the engine bay ready, lift the car appropriately. Either jacks and jack stands, or appropriate gradient ramps with wheel chocks. Once lifted and secured, slide under the rear of your car and proceed with the following steps:

4. Unscrew oil drain plug, hexagon socket - NOTE THIS IS A HEXAGON NOT TORX INSERT, AND THE BOLT IS VERY SOFT (ALUMINUM.) YOU MAY WANT TO SWAP TO STAINLESS STEEL.
5. Drain oil
6. Replace sealing ring
7. After replacing engine oil, replace oil drain plug 37 ft/lb

8. Losen oil filter cover with AF36 (or equivalent) tool.
9. Remove filter cover, remove gasket, pull out filter element.
10. Fit new gasket, replace new filter element.
11. Replace filter and cover into oil filter housing.
12. Hand tighten cover, then torque to 19 ft/lb.
13. Replace engine oil, 7.4L for oil change, 10.4L for engine rebuild/new engine.

Also note, the plastic cap on the fill tube can snap off. It can be unclipped and replaced.

Thank you so much Bob. You're a lifesaver and don't know how you found a DIY already.

Hey Bob,

If I can add the part #'s below that are needed for the oil change. I confirmed the parts twice with my local Porsche dealer. Once I do the oil change this weekend I will know if they gave me the right parts or not.

Good luck, the instructions I listed above come from Porsche's technical documents. Part numbers are always good - thanks.

Can you remind me what size hex insert/Allen you used? I couldn't remember if it was a 22 or 23mm.

Hey guys,

Sorry to bring up an old thread. But I just picked up a 997.2 turbo a couple weeks back and this is my first (and hopefully not my last) porsche.
Looking to do an oil change and came across this thread. Not many DIY's for the 997.2 turbo's which sucks, so i've brought this one back from the dead.

Going back to TTChris's post in post 5 above (https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ml#post3570265), he's mentioned that we need all of these parts for the oil change.

900-123-106-30
948-107-222-00
948-107-322-00
900-123-010-20

I've aded them all in the cart at pelican parts and looking to put the order in.

However, just wanted to clarify and confirm a few things.

The green o-ring for oil filter cover. I don't actually need to buy this separately correct? It appears the filter already comes with one?
Also, do I need both the aluminum crush washer AND the copper washer? or are those meant to be for the same application? If I need both, I believe the aluminium crush washer is for the drain bolt. But where does the copper one go?

Any clarification would be helpful.
Thanks!

I've not done mine yet on my own but have ordered filter kits from Suncoast.
Seems if I remember, it had the filter, large O-ring, small O-ring, and ONE aluminum washer. No copper washer.

The o-ring did not come with the filter on my last order. I had to order separate - (I ordered thru Sonnen)

Also - I think the copper washer is an error. Not sure where that would go with just an oil change. The other parts all are correct.

Yah I can't seem to think where the copper washer would go.

I'm going to go ahead and order the filter kit which should include the rubber o ring/gasket for the oil filter cover. Will pass on buying these extra o ring gaskets.

Ill grab a few of the aluminum crush washers as those are cheap and may not come with the kit.

And then not bother with the copper washer.

The copper washer is for 997.1 dry sump oil reservoir and I think doesn't apply to 997.2.
