Quick CCB Question.

Hey All,

I recently had some service done to a 2011 Turbo S done, and when I picked up the car they informed me of a chip in the Carbon Ceramic rotor on the front passenger side. Upon me looking at it, it's about the size of a nickel on the outer edge of the rotor. I never noticed it before, not sure if it was there before of if someone nicked it when taking the wheel off/on.

I've done some reading, some say it doesn't affect performance, some say it does, etc etc.

My question to you all: How frequently does this happen? I know the rotors have a tendency to be like pottery and chip or crack easily. Any of you guys accidentally chip your rotors before?

The price tag on new rotors is..........well.......you know.

Thanks guys.

I would not run a chipped rotor.

I would also want to know how they noticed it, was it when they were taking the wheel off, could they have done it.

Have you had the wheels off at any other point in time?

If they are the only ones who work on it, then I would think they are responsible. I find it unlikely that a chip just comes out of the rotor.

My thoughts exactly. I have 53k on my PCCBs, no chips.

Noticed it when removing the wheel. Did not claim responsibility.

As others have mentioned, extremely rare and in fact I can't even recall a similar case on this forum.

Unless you've recently drove on roads with loose rocks (even then it is extremely rare) I would speculate that damage occured when they removed wheel. Unfortunately this is imposible to prove one way or another and I could be wrong. I would go straight to manager's level on this one. Mine at 43k still looks perfect and *NO* you should not drive with a chipped rotor!

I would not drive with a chipped rotor, given the "brittle" nature of these rotors that increases the chances for a shattered rotor.

I'd be curious to know if they use the guide rods to remove wheels. I can see someone getting lazy and just pulling them off. I sold my car with 68K miles on and some track days and the rotors were perfect. I was a believer in changing out the pads at around 50% wear.

I had about 20K on my C4S and the discs were in great shape. The wheels had been off numerous times at the dealer as well as in my garage. Both the dealer and I used the guide rods so no chips.
Now that I have center locks I ended up getting the center guide just in case so I don't accidentally hit them with a rim.

A previous car my younger bro had had a chip on it just like you explained. It never caused any issues if that is your concern. Easiest way to see if the wheel caused the damage is take the wheel off and clean it then feel if there are any nicks.
