Question for Manual 997TT owners....
Yesterday, while doing some spirited driving, i had a mis-shift. I wanted to go from gear 3 to 4 but while completing the shift, it didn't follow through. It went into neutral and I stepped on the throttle. The engine revved to 7000-7400 rpm's. I wasn't sure if it was a stage 4 overrev, so called my friends in a local garage and immediately went to read my DME. God's grace no overrev's in range 4. It happened today as well and i am sure it bounced off 7200-7400 again.
Since i am new to the car, the mechanical feel of the short shifter is a little different from the BMW Z4//M i used to drive. Will take some getting used to.I am sure because of yesterday's incident, it wouldn't be anything. My question is, is there a rev limiter that doesn't allow the engine to go into a stage 4 over rev or something like that?
I asked my tech what is the over rev range for each gear and he wasn't sure. I see various posts regarding the ranges for each number but can someone tell me exactly what are the over rev ranges? Will accidentally shifting into neutral cause the engine to protect itself by some sort of rev limiter despite throttle input?
Newbie here, so please share your opinions. Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Mathew

. He has an '09.To the OP...you'll be fine. Typically range 4 and 5 will happen due to some kind of mechanical over-rev. For example, if you shift from 5th down to 2nd instead of 4th...at a high speed. If you just floored the throttle in neutral the engine has a rev limiter which will stop rpm's before you can cause any damage. I wouldn't worry about it..

When you shift 3 to 2 inappropriately, no fuel shut off will save your engine.

When you accelerate by stepping on the gas, there is a fuel shut off just after to redline. On a 6 speed, redline is 6750 RPM on gears 1-5, and 6800 RPM 6th gear. Fuel shut off is 7000 RPM in all gears. Engine velocity and momentum will cause the revs to climb momentarily - but it is limited.

Also picked up rev ranges for 997TT on another forum:
Range 1- 6800-7000
Range 2- 7000-7200
Range 3- 7200-7400
Range 4- 7400-7900
Range 5- 7900-9000
Range 6- 9000++
Is this correct?
