IHRA Rules
IHRA Rules
With new found power and a hankering to establish "official" numbers I took a look at the regulations as established by the IHRA and my local track (Palm Beach International Raceway) to confirm my compliance. I was disappointed to find a new (established 2012?) requirement as follows..........
• All cars 9.99 or quicker in 1/4 mile must have engine diaper plus an IHRA or IHRA license (engine diaper does not need to be certified).
• All Sport Compact cars 11.99 or quicker must have engine diaper
Based on the above and if I understand correctly, I must apply an engine diaper to both my Turbo S and GT2 as both will run quicker than 9.99 seconds.
Can any one with first hand experience confirm I must use an engine diaper if I run below 9.99 seconds?

They are very easy rules to become compliant with.
NHRA license requires a basic medical examination and 6 passes that are signed off by mother licensed driver. Three passes that are 1/2 track and 3 full passes. At that point you will have a license. The license should be good to 7.50.
As for the engine diaper, you can easily install a diaper that can easily be removed. They have diapers that install with straps.

1. Any idea if 911's are classified as "sport compacts"?
2. Have you seen an engine diaper for 911's? I see then for front engine V6 and V8's but nothing for our rear mounted 6's.
3. Have you had any luck mounting diapers on 911's?
I ran IHRA (Summit) drag racing events all last year. Granted I'm only in the 11's with my setup, but I passed all tech inspections and was never required to add a diaper. The only question that ever came up was that if I ran faster than 9.99 I would have to have a roll bar to pass tech.

have you run your car at the track yet? 9.99 isn't as easy as it seems
just doing a quick search on what exactly an engine diaper does it appears its purpose is to catch oil should a rod bust a hole in the oil pan. since the turbo motor is a dry sump and theres no oil pan and its a horizontal motor it doesn't seem needed. i would bet the ihra officials don't see many porsche motors at the track

Havent brought the GT2 to the track however based on what I am seeing via my V-box I am very certain it will break into the 9's. The Turbo S, with less CMS upgrades, runs 9.87 in the quarter, I am very certain it will do well.
I only want to establish numbers for my own gratification and for CMS. I hope to represent the P-car crowd well at PBIR.
I hope they may consider a dry sump exclusion but doubt it.
i have a friend that runs at pbir almost every weekend and his sport compact car runs 10.5 and i know he doesn't have any blankets. don't think it will be an issue
a bigger issue would a roll bar for 135 mph or faster and a chute for speeds in excess of 150 mph

I will let you know, I have been told once you break 9.99 they make sure you meet all rqmts. I have a helmet and the roll bar but not cushioned. I doubt i'll need a chute
