Best begginer mods

Hey guys I just got my first 997 turbo. I wanted to mod the car but don't know where to start. Friend of mine told me to get the ECU tunning by BBI also to get the Y pipe and the IPD plenum. Also to remove my cats but leave the original exaust. Is that a good first step, also will I feel a dramatic change in power from stock.

My advice, drive the car for awhile and get to know it. At the same time be a voracious reader on the various forums, there is a wealth of information on the questions you're asking. BTW, removing the Cats in Calif will cause you car to flunk the semi annual smog test, bad advice, so be careful before acting.

You should log several thousand mile to get he seat time to know the car, as well as shake it out to make Shure it is all sound. Once the mods start there will be issues that arise. Make sure you are staring on a clean slate that is in good working order.

Do an exhaust first, feel free to do it immediately. The stock exhaust is terrible. As for the rest of the mods, I agree to wait a couple months.

Congratulations on your new purchase! The 997 turbo is a fantastic machine. I would recommend doing the coils, plugs, air filter, etc. From there, a flash would be the best bang for your buck as far as power goes. Suspension is another good upgrade if you want to add a little more fun to the drivability of the car. If you'd like to discuss this further, feel free to e-mail us at sales@eplabs.net

so you recommend doing plugs, coils, air filter first before the tune?

Unless you have the service records previous to your purchase, and coils, plugs and air filter have been done in the past few thousand miles; we would recommend getting everything up to date before adding more power.

As others have mentioned, it would be best to go over the car to make sure the maintenance is up to date and the car is sound.

Once you know everything is solid, the best route to take would be an exhaust and tune, you will be shocked how much this can wake the car up!

If you have any questions, feel free to get in contact with me, I would be happy to assist!

Good advice.
I had an EPL flash installed by my indie through Tony at EPL. A tremendous improvement in power and performance. Next was a Kline exhaust which provided another performance boost, but soon after install, I began getting cel light with random misfire codes. I changed plugs and coils - end of problem. I thought I was safe on a 25K cpo car, but learned that cpo doesn't always mean fresh.

Hey guys thanks for all the advise. The previous owner had the annual maintenance done few months ago at the dealer so I'm thinking they checked everything. So I think I'm gonna get used to the car a little bit more before the mods

Good call! Also, your friend did not really give you good advice when you do start your mods in my opinion. For one, you cannot get rid of cats and leave exhaust as they are one piece and cannot be separated.

Also, you cannot just delete Cats without a tune or your check engine light will be your new best friend and ride with you on every trip

As most would agree, learn the car, because they are dangerous fast stock, and power comes on surprisingly at times. Then tune and exhaust are about all most people need. Would not waste money on Plenum or Y-pipe.

Enjoy!

Good call OP. I drove mine stock for nearly 8 years and 60,000 miles before finally taking the plunge!

Do the bbi stuff if you want 650 hp. Their y pipe and plenum, along with their inconel headers, exhaust, and cobb tune will get you to about 650 hp.
