Another Round of mods (rods and goodies)
Another Round of mods (rods and goodies)
So last winter I swapped to 5558 precision BB turbos, sambTT's intercoolers, and proEFI tuned by Garth @ undercover.
This winter I am adding:
1)RPS triple clutch
2)GT2 slave conversion
3)Pauter rods
4)ported heads
5)mild cams
6) 12mm head studs
Ill have Garth back down to re-tune again. Car hauls *** right now (similar to Prodigy's car) but we have it dialed back esp at low RPM to make the rods happy. Looking forward to turning it up.
Right now motor is torn down to the pistons. Rough game plan is to start reassembly early Jan (cams are 6 weeks out).
More pics to come. Ill be gone for roughly 2 weeks late November, but I hope to start grinding on the heads before that.

what cams are you doing?

yea.. I dont plan on anything stickier than street tires until I do axles, diff and diff cover.

Interesting on build like this is it not worth upgrading the pistons to maybe GT2 RS spec? I've heard they are tougher in GT2 RS but this may just be Porsche hype?
Not withstanding the question above is it also not worth going 3.8?

I would go 3.8L if I was changing pistons.
My power goal is 1krw, and I will not turn it up from there (really
). If my plans were any higher than that I would be resleeving and going to the larger bore.
It nearly doubles the cost of doing the motor, so it doesnt make sense for my power levels.
As far as I can tell, the stock pistons should live forever at 1krw.

Do double check that re pistons buddy. I melted a piston and liner on a stock set up. I was running very high speed for a while on autobahn 170mph + but still be very interesting to hear if the pros know whether stock pistons are good for 1000 whp.
Agreed.. If I was going to cruise the 'bahn at 170mph I would probably upgrade as well
But if you melted the piston, more than likely a better piston would have not helped. Typically "better" pistons are stronger, but not necessarily handle higher heat (note I said typically.. there are piston materials that handle heat better as well)
I am also running E85, conservative tune (extra fuel+ timing) which is even easier on pistons
Depending on timing I may have the tops ceramic coated as well.

you can def do a lot more than 1000whp on stock piston/liner. i have done it and i know others that have too.

So are there any advantages to going 3.8, 3.9, 4.1, 4.2 etc. Thinner liners, more torque and power but I've never felt my 3.6 low on torque tbh. Also at what level does the gearbox need beefing up? thanks in advance
Complex answer.. but more displacement is always better for power (better low end out of boost, less boost to make the same power etc).
But (this is IMO) I dont usually like stroking cars that will see a lot of miles. Lots of additional cylinder wall wear, etc. Every engine platform is different though.
there are really no downsides to better cylinders and bigger pistons (3.8L) other than cost. properly spec'd pistons will last as long as factory. Pistons designed for very high power though often wear faster (they need more clearance, so they rock more on cold start ) and are actually sometimes softer, but stronger due to geometry.
