997TT vs 996 Ruf 550

sorry, am not quite sure where to post this...

the 997 Turbo's numbers are up, and d*mn they're impressive.

Does anyone have any idea how the quarter mile times stack up to a Ruf 550HP conversion?

i'm GUESSING that the fantastic torque curve of the 997 is what's behind the amazing 0-60 time. but the Ruf DOES have over 70HP more, so i'm assuming that it would eventually overhaul the 997?

anyone with a Ruf 550 ever run their car against the clock?

A RUF 550 HP would wipe its a$$ with a new stock 997TT. (i.e. the 550HP RUF would be convincingly faster) Remember, RUF always has a tendancy to underrate their packages/HP too...

It's not all that 'bold." !? 483HP for the new 997TT right ? vs. 550HP for a (at most) 100lbs heavier 996 TT....the power to weight is STRONGLY in the favor of the RUF 550 996TT... (and thats assuming its "only" making its claimed 550 flywheel HP which we know its not...its making much more than that...take a look at everything that the RUF 550 package entails** New bigger turbos, intercoolers, exhuast,ECU, and more...it's realistically equivelent to an EVO stage 4+ package.(600BHP) I'm sorry, the new 997TT is mild evolution of the current turbo at best. It'll only be "marginally quicker" than a current X50 TT 996...but your right, it's all calculated assumptions based on stats...we'll know for sure in a few months when testing is publicized about it.

I know i know, wasnt trying to be a dik but i feel people take alot of prde in what they own (not you) but in general, and whenever a newer or updated/better version comes out people talk bad about it always, purely because they dont want to see their model become "old" or obselete. This is just in geeneral, not just pointed towards porsche turbo's and so on, i just feel we shoudl wait a little bit to see what the numbers are, handling, weight and so on to make better judgements

Kevin,

You don't think the variable geometry turbines in the 997TT will change the way the HP and Torque curves look? I think we may all be surprised.

...I do, and we'll see how much of a net affect it will have....but no, I don't think it will be shocking revelation. Variable geometry turbos aren't new to the marketplace and no amount of gimmickery is going to mask the *heft of 3500lbs.* No matter what the power curve at 483BHP and that kind of weight its performance potential will be limited in its standard full luxury trim. If you want a track car, look to the new 997 GT3.....the 997TT will be a good all-arounder...street car. Cater's better to the "typical" $130+K owners demographic.

RUF 550 is making 600 hp and will waste the new 997 turbo.

Can the Ruf 550 beat a 3.4 0 - 60? It seems we have more at play here than just hp and torque. Perhaps gearing. Perhaps the areas under the curve are dramatically increased or the power specs are a bit on the conservative side.

I agree that the 997TT should not keep pace with the Ruf 550 if all other variables are the same. Does anyone have real world times for 0 - 60 and 1/4 on the Ruf 550 package?

i did a search online today, and found an independent test where a Ruf R-Turbo did 0-125mph/0-200kmh in 11.6 seconds. That was a Ruf 520HP, not even the full 550HP kit. the 997 Turbo is quoted at 12.2 seconds for the tiptronic.

so i'm guessing that the 997TT would pull on the Ruf from a dig, but once the Ruf got in its powerband, it would be over pretty quickly (well, in less than 12.2 seconds anyway!).

in real world conditions of course, where you'd be on and off the throttle, the 997TT may run the Ruf a LOT closer than that, because of the incredibly flat torque curve. on the Ruf website, the torque peak of the Ruf 550 is close to 4K RPM, IIRC, compared to the 997TT, which we know peaks at just under 2K.

Oh, and for perspective, the RT12 runs the 0-125mph sprint in 9.7 seconds. hehehe! (can't effing wait!)

Where are you getting 12.2 second for the 997TT tiptronic? The only offical infromation I have seen was a brochure PCNA Fed Exed to me about the 997TT and it said 11.6 1/4 mile for the 997TT which would be the same as the figure for the Ruf 550. Then one also has to consider Porsche never advertises numbers lower and even the same as real world performance so one would assume the 997TT tiptronic would be 11.4 to 11.5 range or better in the 1/4 mile.

i was getting the 12.2 seconds for the 997TT tiptronic from porsche themselves. sorry if i was unclear in my post, the measure is NOT for the quarter mile, but for the 0-200kmh/0-125mph sprint:

https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ad.php?t=42493

this is an official Porsche bulletin.

lemme see if i can find that article that tested the Ruf 520 doing 11 and change for the 0-200kmh run...
