Oil passing to Intercooler. Is this normal?

Hello. I went to get my oil changed in my 2007 997.1 turbo. It has upgraded Turbo’s and intercoolers with silicon hosing.

I drive the car hard but maintain it religiously. The oil level light came on yesterday so I came to get the oil changed and found oil seeping from the driver side intercooler with the car on the lift. Why is it happening and could it cause any damage? Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks. 🙏

First time I’ve seen oil seeping from the intercooler.

I also saw this hole that looks like it should have a plug in it. Anyone knows what it’s for?

Have you ever overfilled your oil? Some will rely on the dash indicator and fill so the last block is lit and sometimes that is too much. Any excess has a tendency to accumulate in the driver side IC.

Make sure you don't overfill (leave the last block unlit), clean out the IC and monitor over the next 500 miles or so.

It could be turbos, but I think you would be getting more oil?

Oh, the missing bolt, that appears to be a cam cover bolt to a slide that the WM specifically says to NOT remove (and it appears to be a source of oil - but when the bolt was in place):

Any work done in that area of the car recently? I wonder if it was moved and then not torqued all the way and slowly backed out. That is a fresh missing bolt since it is so shiny.

Is the passenger side one in it's proper location?

Thanks! Yes theres one on the passenger side. Yes, after doing the oil change I topped it up so the last bar would also be filled. Guess ill have to keep it like that for the time being. I drove the car for a 3 hour road trip right after the oil change. No problems so far. Ill have to check to see where I can find another bolt for that hole.

You can drain some oil out if you are so inclined.

Remember that screw holds a guide that sits on top of the cam chain. Hopefully the pressure of the chain is keeping it in place. I would get this replaced sooner rather than later. Hopefully you are not getting any strange noises or seeing any orange plastic in your oil filter.

According to the PET it is a Torx screw M 6 X 16, but I do NOT know the thread size. Maybe someone else can chime in.

thank you so much for this info. I’m going to try to find a screw like that for it.

Hi Ed

It is a standard M6 thread with a 1 mm pitch. Strength is (I am not quite sure) 10.9.

Concerning the oil in the inter cooler. Apart from the origin of the oil the cooler has imho a leak!

Regards
Hans

Thank you for the specs. Well, Im going to get it checked out because there's no other way oil could seep out of it without a leak. It could be loosing boost pressure there although the car pulls very hard.

So I put in a bolt where it was missing. Drove the car hard yesterday and looked at the intercooler oil leak. Seams to be spitting out oil even more. Im going to remove the rear bumper and try to see if the intercooler is leaking and see where the oil is coming from.
