Update...

I successfully installed the new Multi-Function Wheel in my 987.2.

Thanks OP for the excellent post and breakdown on the steps involved to do the multifunction steering wheel swap...

It took under 40 minutes to complete (first timer).

I was real nervous unlatching the air bag. Lucky I had the new wheel sitting there and I was able to test releasing the 4 latches on my new wheel and was able to judge the direction of the allen key and force required. Once I tested it a few times, it was a breeze. Advice on this page saved me the 3 x $190 my local dealer wanted to do the swap.

Ryan at Suncoast was excellent and very helpful as well.

Now I am off to find someone to do the programming.

Harold,

When you get it programmed please have them pay special attention to the PCM programming part, which enables the "multi function wheel" programming option for the screen button.

My dealer has been unable to solve this, and I would pay for a straightforward procedure I can hand off to them!

are you saying, you did the multi function wheel swap, and that the dealer was unable to program the buttons?

Wow...

I am going Wednesday morning. I will let you know. The Service Representative said they had done another retro fit and that there had been an issue (person had the wrong part). But also added that it should be straight forward. 1 Hour at $139.

They got the car to recognize the wheel - the buttons all light up and work, and the PDK display also lights up for sport/sportplus/launch control.

What they didn't get working was the "Multi Funct Wheel" setting on the PCM which allows you to customize the behavior of one of the buttons on the wheel.

Specifically, this:

Hi Arcade,

PCM option is fully activated. Thanks for pointing it out. I specifically asked them to check that the option get turned on (thanks to your post.) I have about 6 options that I can set the menu button to (not sure which I will use yet.)

New wheel fully installed (by me) and programmed by dealer for $152 (all in). Pretty happy with the upgrade.

Hey that's awesome that they got it to work!

I wish my dealer could figure it out - I've burned far too many hours there while they struggled.

I wonder if I could get the tech's contact info (or at least a detailed description of what he turned on?)

Great DIY!

Used your DIY to install my DCTMS flat bottom steering wheel and it worked great. Thanks!

On people with 997.1 sport wheels (round airbag) has anyone done anything with the Dayak silver plastic surround?

I know it matches the radio surround plastic color but I just don't think it blends in too well.

Wonder if it can be covered in black leather or painted a color to blending better, maybe flat black?

Airbag surround

I found the piece that you are talking about is attached to the airbag itself. I purchased some body color paint to do just what you have described. In the end I felt like the volcano grey was good. I may do it in the future.

I did check with the dealer to see if I could just buy that surround piece but they said that it only comes attached to the $800 airbag.

I have just swapped out a non multifunction tip wheel, for multifunction tip wheel (control module & harness included), installation was pretty straight forward but now the tip switches no longer work. Is this something that will be remedied by dealer programming? I understood the multifunction part would need programming but thought the tip switches would be plug & play. Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I take to Porsche for diagnostics.

Knowing Porsche, I would expect you either need to program the wheel controller to tell it about the tip switches (and tell your tip trany about the new wheel controller that is allowed to change its gears) - or - you need a specific version of the controller that comes hard-coded for tip or not tip.

I'd try to see if the 1st is the case initially... that you just need to program the tranny controller to know about the new steering wheel controller. (or activate it with some codes to handle tip tranys)

Does anyone have a picture of this mysterious place where the long 1/4 inch allen wrench should go? Is the procedure the same for a 997.2? I feel blind, not being able to figure this out.
help!

NAV
ps- i'd be happy to talk to someone on the phone on this.
