Playing data CD-Rs on an early '05

Hey guys,

Just recently, I was made aware that you can play data format (MP3) in our cars, however my early '05 is unable to do this. I think i have the first generation PCM and was told this could be the reason.

Does anyone know about this and of any solutions. The only drawback to my CS experience so far is not being able to listen to my iPod.....a data cd would be more than sufficent for me without going the Dension route.

Thanks!

I believe you need a firmware update (no hardware change) - needs to be done by a dealer-service person. Not sure what the cost would be. Pretty sure I remember reading this a while back.

The MP3 Playback is a 06 and newer feature. To get your iPod to work you need a Dension unit, it replaces the CD changer and works very well.

You can get one from Eric@bumperplugs.com

Good Luck and enjoy your car.

Is it the PCM or the overall system. Any way to update it, to make it work?

I am not 100% certain, but I think that it is a PCM system. You can do a search to see if anyone has a solution, or you can call your local dealer and ask them what they think.

Mine plays MP3's but I don't use it. I use the radio or iPod, send Eric an email. He will give you a great price, and there are a number of DIY post for the install of the unit.

Did a bit more searching. You may need a new headunit-PCM but it really depends on how "early" your 05 is. The new hardware was in the cars before the firmware was finished (so no MP3 ability). If the hardware is OK there is a "service campaign" number: W610 that should allow the dealer to upgrade your firmware for free. If they want to charge you for a new PCM you really should drop Eric @ bumperplugs an email and get the Dension instead - plug in your iPod and let the disk player gather dust.
Good luck.

There is no update to the early PCM in the '05 cars that will allow them to play an MP3 CD. This was a hardware change with the '06 model year. If you could find a PCM from a totaled car then you might be in business.

I was lucky with my 05 cab. Previous owner had the PCM replaced due to faulty unit, and got the newer version that plays MP3, under warranty. Hint hint.

I was in the same boat as you. My early 2005 (Launch Car) had the initial PCM release that doesn't support MP3 files. I went w/ the Dension GW500 1 1/2 years ago and couldn't be more pleased. I've got a 30 gb POD attached which gives me plenty of music.

Go Dension . . . 'Not a paid political announcement'

I have had a few radio's replaced under warranty on both my VW's and Audi's. I have complained that the volume turns up really loud with out warning as I was driving. Most new cars come with speed compensating volume control, to adjust for outside noise. I believe that the 997 has the same system.

Now I will say that the problems I have had were legitimate, but I also know there is really no way for the dealer to recreate the problem if it is random and has happened more then once.
