How often does a 997 need to be started?

Hi guys,

I have a 997.2 that is currently spending most of its time in storage and was wondering how often it should be started/driven around to block to prevent issues like flat battery, etc?

If you have to hibernate it, make sure you use Stabil in the gas tank (check w/ your dealer), pressurize tires to 50PSI and connect a battery maintainer. Once out of hibernation drive it often, that's what these cares were made for.

how frequently/infrequently do you drive it?

if you drive it at least once a week, a battery maintener is pretty much all you need.

Usually drive it a few times a week, but renovations (rebuild of garage) have made it so it has to stay at a mate's place for 3-4 weeks. I'll make an effort and take it for a drive every 1-2 weeks. Thanks for the replies

Suggest having your battery tested to see if any of the plates have been damaged (sulphated) from the car being in storage.

Hi James,

I think PCA have a special on battery maintainers at the moment. May be worth the investment if you're not driving the car much.

Perfect answer, especially the battery maintainer! Personally, I was happy paying the extra $ to Porsche for theirs rather than one of the many aftermarket available (make sure you plug it in where they tell you to). My tire guy told me to inflate to 55# if it was going to sit for more than a month, otherwise don't worry - depending on the tires they flat spot in a day or two anyway. Lastly, of course, don't waste your time starting it up and idling it every week or two; does more harm than good.

2 years ago my 911 sat in a non-airconditioned garage in Florida all Summer (4 months) and then started the first time as if I had just driven it the day before.

I try to drive mine at least once a week...get the engine and oil up to temp. Sometimes, depending on weather, it'll sit for 2 weeks. I put it on a Porsche battery tender for a week at a time every month or so, just to make sure the battery isn't running low.

With my job and where I live my cars do not get a lot of use. I use a battery tender, stabil and harden the tires. My wife will start it once every 2 weeks or so and I have never had a problem. The manual says 58lbs for storage tire pressure, but still recommends the car be moved occasionaly to prevent flat spotting. But for 3-4 weeks....I wouldn't worry about it.
