PSE or aftermarket

I'm thinking of buying an 07 997S without PSE. I love the sound of PSE though. The dealer wants $4,000 to have the PSE installed. Is there an aftermarket exhaust that sounds like the PSE and doesn't have any drone issues. Less than $4,000 would be a bonus. Thanks.

do the gundo hack instead. just had it done this past weekend and it sounds great. same sound as PSE for 1/10 of the price. unless you care for having two modes silent and loud which the pse provides, just do the hack. search gundo hack or "PSE a waste of money".

I would listen to a few "if" you can but we regularly install TechArt, Tubi and/or Cargraphic systems here. None of them have any drone. The PSE is a very nice sounding system as well but doesn't save weight like the others ones do.

^ +1 on Sharky's comments. The prices on aftermarket are far less than what you were quoted for PSE and sound better in my opinion anyway. I personally prefer the Cargraphic for Porsche cars. There are a number of good aftermarket exhaust systems for the 997S that wont break the bank...

Cargraphic. Sounds like PSE (or what the PSE should sound like). Just a bit louder - just a BIT - zero drone and less than 1/2 the price.

For the $4000 damage, you should be able to do aftermarket mufflers and catalytic converters. There are quite a few products available out there. I have had an AWE system for some 28000 mile so far and am quite satisfied with it.

Do some searching on this forum and rennlist. This topic has been absolutely beaten to death over the years. Don't believe every opinion or factoid you read.

Wow, $4K. I have PSE and it was listed as a $2500 option on the sticker. I suggest you do the Gundo hack for $100. If you aren't happy with the sound after that then go for one of the after markets suggested here - a much better value.

I couldn't find it when I just looked, but you can consider that the PSE was available from Suncoast for about $2600. You can certainly have it installed by an indi shop for a lot less than $4k out the door - even wired with the switch to the dash. BUT, the PSE is clearly written to have no HP benefit and does not provide any weight savings either. Thing is that many of the muffler setups will cost you $2k plus installation. Even the Fabspeed mufflers and cats will run you $2700 plus installation. Many of the other setups are closer to $4k plus installation.
Very much personal preference. Best to listen to a car in person for the best choice.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I love the fact there are so many options.

Spudz- I really like your idea about the Gondo hack. It is cheap enough and if it works hey $100 mod is probably is going to the least expensive mod on the 997. It worth a try.

Alex- If the hack doesn't work out, I may have to make a trip to the Bay Area and to check out the different mufflers/exhaust options you have. Hopefully you'll have some examples I could listen to. Anyway it's a good excuse to visit some friends in the South Bay too.

First of all, the PSE should not cost more than $2,200! Suncoast sells them for much cheaper than quoted to you...

Go with Cargraphic! It sounds lovely, and like the PSE. It does not distort the original sound of the car, unlike Tubi! (Sorry guys, but I don't like Tubi) Cargraphic is at a good price and is high quality!

I'll put in a vote for Fabspeed. This is all subjective stuff so I can't say it's 'better' or 'worse' than others. Just very good. The only part that isn't subjective is the weight savings. Like most other aftermarket products, it's a significant reduction versus OEM or PSE mufflers. And the PSE quote you received seems quite high. But the complete install - including the recommended wiring - can take some time and expense. Between the weight and cost, I don't think it's the best route to take. The appeal of the PSE 'switchable' sound levels can be approximated just by having a lighter right foot when you want to make your car more socially acceptable.

Sounds like a plan and for doing _just_ mufflers it's hard to beat the sound of a Cargraphic. By themselves they sound menacing but yet no drone. Tubi's are a bit higher-pitched (quieter overall).

Just a quick note, the factory 997 PSE has gone up a bit.

Suncoast - the PSE doesn't seem to be listed on your website anymore. You had just run a special on it actually. Is there a link to the listing?
