StrtSwpr996 is infamous around these parts
Anyone any major engine work?

I have pretty much all the bolt ons on my 06 997S and want to squeeze out more power without going to the FI route... Has anyone done anything with the internals, or possibly cams, heads work etc.?... And lets skip the talk about it being a waste of money or "might as well buy a GT3" talk, thanks

Why don`t you want to do FI? Anything specific you`re concerned about or just some generic precautions?

Alan, Schrick was suppose to come out with some cams for the 3.8 but they never materialized. I think 9ff or Ruff makes some custom grind cams for their bored out 3.8L. I didn't see them listed anymore. I don't think there is much to be gained with head work as the heads already in stock form are capable of 93-100hp/litre at not so stratospheric rpm's ala BMW M cars. Without cams designed for the reworked heads I don't know what you can do.

I'm with you on this one...I prefer normally aspirated powerplants myself.

I've got to believe that with all the external bolt-on's, to truely get the maximum hp (and torque) of of the motors you need to get into the cam area. HP is one thing but it still takes torque to get the car moving from a dead stop..........With that being said, sounds like the heads/cams are next on the list.

The X51 Powerkit involves reworked cylinder heads but keeps the same cams... maybe cams can get you more but the factory squeezed out another 26 hp without different cams. I have it on my car and have the complete list of parts involved.

He pretty much has the X51 powerkit minus the heads. The heads on the X51 are just warmed up a tad with some bowlwork, cleaned up exhaust ports and a stiffer exhaust valve..nothing major like larger intake/exhaust valves and completely reworked chambers. If it did it would probably have a different cam package. That's why Porsche didn't go crazy with the heads as they wanted to keep the cam package the way it is. I think most of the gain is from the larger cross section of the intake manifold and larger throttle body along with the better exhaust manifolds.

If you have the X51 powerkit you should get yourself some cats. It would wake up that kit quite a bit.

Thanks for the cats suggestion as now I got something to look forwards to for my car! Which cats would you recommend me? You can PM the suggestion if it is not allowed to be said on the forum, just in case. I forgot to mention that the rpm on the X51 motor get increased by about 300 rpm - maybe due to the stiffer exhaust valves? Won't the 300 rpm increase provide a higher hp gain than if it stayed at the stock limit? I mention this as it could be a limiting factor on a stock engine that is not made to rev that little bit more. What do you think?

I think that it would be more productive for you to contact one of your local race shops that do work on race engines and consult with them if you do want to stay NA and get theoretical maximum out of it. your X51 engine is quite capable and if you do plan to squeeze the max out of it - it would be more effective to get it done professionally than to use some generic bolt-on parts.

It all is a matter of how much money you do want to spend. Fabspeed x-pipe or AWE 200 cell cats + softronic flash is a cheapest way to go - $2,5K.
But you can also put turbo on it - X51 has improved lubrication in engine head and is quite ideal for FI - it is $10K, but you will actually gain a whole lot compared to just 200 cell cats.

Actually the rpm only gets raised by 150rpm with the X51 kit. The non X51 is 7300rpm while the X51 gets raised to 7450rpm. As far as cats if you go with Fabspeed or AWE you get the good HJS 200cpi metallic cat. You can also do a custom cat pipe and save a ton of money using a 100cpi metallic cat but you will need to run an 02 extension or you will get a CEL.

Hmm so im guessing there really isnt too many products out there for just a regular 997S,,, Anyone know of any reputable shops that I might be able to talk to in the socal area that might have dealt with this in the past?
