Exclamation Anyone else with A/C Unit buttons chipping-off issue

Good-day Gentlemen ,

I’m delighted to join and be around this wonderful site . I’ve also been searching the forum for a clue to the A/C unit buttons chipping-off issue with nil success hence I request for your input and assistance on this please.

The issue with my 2006 CS is the Temperature Button and Blower Speed Button on the A/C unit..the black rubber kind of coat on the buttons seems to be chipping-off as you can (see from attached the pdf picture).

The dealer over here is lazy and does not want to do this rather little fix and tells me I’ll have to order the entire AC unit just for the two buttons which I interpret as highway robbery .

Has anyone else had this buttons chip-off issue and how did you solve it or is there a way I can order the buttons online from somewhere.

Many thanks in advance

I had the same thing on my 2005. Should be covered under your 4 yr warranty if it hasn't expired

If we’re talking Porsche warranty...Over here it’s for the first two years only then one pays annually if wish to renew for the next 6 years. Anyways the dealer tells I’ll have to order and pay for the entire AC unit just for the two buttons and yes I've renewed my warranty.

This is very common with the velvet rubber coating, and is not limited to Porsche. I had the same problem with my Touareg when my wife drove it. I was told that it caused by hand lotion.

I had my HVAC unit replaced by VW under the warranty, however the NAV unit and a few other things weren't.

I would try another dealer if yours isn't responsive, if that doesn't work, you could try Matte Black model paint.

You wrote this while I was writing my other response, does Marz have more then one dealer? You could also try calling Porsche Cars Marz and asking someone higher up.

Ok, I’ll go back to the dealer and sort them out. Obviously this must be under Porsche warranty.

Else I’ll e-mail Porsche Germany directly and express dissatisfaction about this.

Thanks,

It starts at my car. But have more wear on the PCM Frame, Defroster and several other parts. CPO warranty doesnt cover it and Porsche wants for the repair/replacement of all parts rounds about 4000$ + Labor.
If it would be easy to disassemble I would send it to bumperplugs and get a real nice finish...but I have no plan how to manage that and Porsche says it is about a min 3. hours work (420$+)

Wow -seeing these pics makes me want to never touch my buttons again...

Either that or grease up your fingers with some vasaline first to reduce the friction.

Funnily Porsche says that this problem occurs due to hand cream or other fat containing products (fries ). Might wear a surgeon glove for the car.

With the costs & time needed to replace the AC panel, the suggestion by Northvan to try painting the two buttons makes a lot of sense. If the new paint chips off eventually, it is easy to do over. $5 or $10 in materials & an hour of work versus big bucks. Replacement parts also, whether new or from a wreck, may suffer the same problems after a while.

BTW the replacement units on my VW are a hard plastic, no rubber coating...no problem in the future.
