Low Oil Pressure?
Low Oil Pressure?
Wondering if i've got an issue or not...looking for 2nd, 3rd & 4th opinions
...
What I'm used to;
Oil temp 150-200, Oil Pressure 3+ at idle, 5 at full throttle
Oil temp 200, Oil Pressure 1 at idle, 4-5 at full throttle
Lately
Oil temp 150-200, Oil Pressure 3 at idle, 5 at full throttle
Oil temp 200-225, Oil Pressure 0.75 at idle, 4-4.75 at full throttle
That said, I find my oil temp has been a bit higher than usual but nothing too concerning, but for the past month i've noticed my pressure dipping below 1 which in all my car i've never seen. It doesn't bounce, just settles at 0.75
I had the oil sending unit replaced about a year ago, and just had an oil change 2 weeks ago
Also have 3rd radiator but that hasn't made any difference in oil temp (but didn't really expect it to in day to day driving). I did buy an LN Engineering 160deg thermostat, which will be in this week
Car now has 51,000 miles on it .....I've been driving it for 43,000 of those miles and never had this issue, my 993 had 65,000 miles and was perfect
No lack of power, no issues driving, no leaks
Am i being too picky over .25 bar?
thanks!

I have an 07 C2, once the oil is at 200, the oil pressure at idle is around 1.7. Oil was changed 500 miles ago, and the pressure has not changed. Oil pressure doesn't really drop much until the temp is 150. Could it be the oil sender unit again? I assume the oil level is okay and that the new oil has the same specs at the old (0W40).

Oil is the same, Mobil 0W40. All my cars (997's, 996's & 993's) have idled around 1+, and this one was no different until recent
My first thought was the sending unit again, but just seems odd it would go twice in such a short period
The last time it was replace was due to the fact even at start up it would go pass 4, but idle was ok
Once replace went back up to 5 when cold
According to the manual as long as the oil pressure is at 3.5 bar at 5,000 rpm then there is adequate pressure. However, changes in oil pressure always make me nervous, so I would be inclined to have someone check it out just for peace of mind.
From the manual. With the engine warmed up and running at a speed
of 5000 rpm, the engine oil pressure should be
approx. 3.5 bar or higher.

I'm bringing it in later this week when the new LM thermostat gets here....get it all done together
just trying to figure out what to expect. i'm not sure what the warranty is on the last sending unit they put in, it's been a bit over a year so i'd assume there is none

I would think that the oil pressure is lower because the oil temps are higher as per your notes. That could be outside temps or clogged radiator? Doubt it's the gauge. Post what they find and how the LN thermostat affects oil temps. I see 225 regularly at 70+ degrees but I don't pay too much attention to hot pressure at idle. Will look. Makes you wish there was a real water temp. gauge.
The oil system is unregulated on these cars. That is, the oil pressure changes (increases) with an increase in engine speed....As far as Porsche is concerned as long as you have a certain pressure at 5,000 RPM then it is considered normal...I believe 3.5 bar or greater is normal, I'd have to check....it should be in your manual.
Of course your concern is the fact that the pressure is lower than previous. Temperature being higher will do this for sure. My concern would be why is the temp higher? Ambient conditions (outside temp) will of course have an effect so in your case it may be quite normal......Again as long as your oil pressure at 5,000 RPM is as per the manual, you are good....
I have been involved with a lot of the older 911's and zero oil pressure at idle can be normal......
Something to consider. The next oil change have them cut open your old oil filter. What you don't want to find is any metal particles which would indicate bearing wear or other impending failures.....The good thing is that doing this you may catch a problem before a catastrophic failure. And please, I'm not trying to scare you, it's just a way of keeping an eye on your engine as it wears over time...As these 997's get more mileage we may start to see more issues crop up. I.e. IMS bearings etc. etc. It's nice to catch them before they cause a complete failure....

I will check mine when I leave work tonight and report back. I seem to be running about 220 for oil temp when I remember it was always around 200. Weather here in Ottawa is alot more humid and warm compared to when I took the car out though.
JP, in the winter I see 225 constant temp, but in summer or on track I approach 250. Today, in 94F temps, I was at nearly 250. I don't like that, though. Considering some racing modifications to keep oil temps a bit cooler.

How's your oil pressure?
That's what I would expect......thanks for the data (and making me feel like i'm not crazy)
Bringing it in to dealer tomorrow only because they replaced the oil sending on warranty and told me it's still under warranty if it's the same thing
btw, when i told them the symptoms they said 'if there's no CEL, don't worry, everything fine'
Of all my 911's, never had pressure go below 1
I'm really stumped now........
Took it to the dealer, he said everything ok and it's normal. Said it would range from car to car depending on mileage, oil etc... blah blah blah
Being stubborn i bought a new oil sending unit (it was only $89) took it to my mechanic, got him to install it..well...now it's even weirder
Oil temp 150-200, Oil Pressure 3 at idle, 5 at full throttle (but got stuck at 4 on start up, rev a bit and started reporting 5)
Oil temp 200-225, Oil Pressure 0.75 at idle, 4 max at full throttle
Now it won't even go to 4.5/4.75 @ 200. The other odd thing as mentioned above is on start up cold, it doesn't pass 4, but if i give it a bit of gas it will hit 5 and become normal.
Starting up hot (200) you see the need almost get stuck a 0.5 and i give it gas and it starts working again. When starting, you actually see the needle pause for a sec before continuing
It almost seems like the engine is not properly communicating the pressure properly
Is there anything else other than the oil sending unit in this mix?
Again, no engine issues, no power loss
