PCM Satnav DVD Drive
PCM Satnav DVD Drive
My recent purchase 2006 C2S developed a problem with the Sat Nav - it kept asking me to load the Disc whenever I plotted a route but the car always had me on the right road when no route was set. the Indy I bought it from said it there was an intermittent fault showing on the DVD drive, so I booked it in. They replaced the DVD drive but my 2005 DVD map was stuck in the drive so they used another from a car they were selling which was a 2007 disc. The car thought it was 200 miles away but soon sorted itself out. When I started to drive home the system went crazy and kept jumping from one road to another. They got the disc out of the old dvd drive and put my 2005 disc back into my car. However I still have the same fault. They tried changing the GPS receiver but this did not work.
Does the dvd drive need to have a certain firmware to match the PCM as it seems obvious to me that changing the drive has caused something to go wrong.

Try burning the PCM Nav disc on another DVD and try using the copied one.
When I upgraded the maps from the 2005 I had on my 2006 C4S, there was a software update needed to the PCM. Wonder if your dealer applied that update or just put in the replacement disk.

It depends on what current version you have whether you 'need' to take it in.
If you're making a jump from the very orig PCM maps & firmware to the most current maps, you'll likely want to take it in or make sure you get the complete kit to do the full upgrade (not just the most recent map disc). As I recall, there are 3 main PCM firmware releases. Someone can tell you which version you have based on the info you can provide from the MAIN/TRIP button tool/trick.
Good luck

Does the drive itself 'paired' to the pcm?

Check the software levels of your PCM to ensure it is at the proper level. Also check your NAV DVD disc to once again make sure it is compatible your PCM S/W level.
As 'paddyh' mentioned if you had an early (ie. 2005) PCM you had to go through a number of PCM updates before the latest (for that series PCM) NAV DVD disc would function.
If your NAV mapping and routing S/W worked when you purchased the car then something has gone 'south'. If it's never functioned correctly I'd suspect a mis-match between PCM and NAV DVD or a bad or copied disc.
Does your PCM have phone capability? That's one to check that you've got a post early build 2005 unit.
GL and let us know your progress.

Car build date was oct 2006 and it's a 2007 model. Nav routing was intermittent but once you got a route plotted it was 100% ok. The fault was that it sometimes asked for the DVD to be inserted when you planned a route - everything else worked fine.
Ok this is what I have pressing trip and main
On the header it says Software version 4.0
Under each individual heading as follows;
PCM actual and target 05395BD/4505
Amplifier is 00017600/3105
Phone is 05352A54/3505
System is 05462AD1/4605
CD is 038/3003
Nav has nothing for Target but shows 00174440/1308 for Actual

Being at level 4.0 means you don't have an early version PCM.
I guess by your comment it worked or works intermittently. Do you have a 'Porsche' NAV disc or is it a copy? It sounds like the NAV player is having a hard time reading the disc. If it's a valid disc try cleaning it. If its a copy that might be the root cause of your problem. Copies of NAV DVD discs can be problematic.
ps. Sometimes resetting either the NAV DVD Player or resetting the PCM S/W function from the 'NAV' Set screen helps.

Does it also constantly read the DVD when you just have it on MAP and not navigating anywhere or is this in 'memory' on the PCM?
I suppose if they swapped in a suspect DVD drive then this could account for it. Especially as from stationary/startup the MAP seems to know where you are for about 2-3 minutes of town/twisty road driving (Did I mention I am in the UK?) before it gets 'lost'
