steering wheel swap issues

the last couple of days I've been trying to swap my steering wheel triangular shape from my 09 .2 gen to a .2 newer style round airbag.. last weekend I had the car at the stealer, they told me they had some issues with the airbag, because it was not sitting properly on the SW ( tech was placing airbag incorrectly) also told me horn didnt worked ( I asked if he could do piwis on horn, I can't remember the answer but it was no) I was a little embarrassed thinking that it was my fault.. so I just had my old wheel put back on again..

during the week I did some research and some members mentioned that the column switch need it to be replaced in order to get the horn working, I placer an order on one..I ask suncoast for the part number, but my dealer had one in stock. so i bought the local one, today I took everything apart and to my surprise the steering column switch is the same part number as the one I did received..

I put the new one in just in case, tomorrow Im going to get everything programed at the dealer, I'm thinking that the first time I only need it the piwis program to get my horn working, but tomorrow I'll see if the horn doesn't work then they sold me the same switch that my car already had and need the part I've been watching some other members put in on pdk's, if horn works then I just need it piwis first time

maybe someone on the forum has done the .1 to .2 gen steering wheel but not using the pdk switch, if so and know the part number can you please tell me ..

Not sure if you have a PDK car.

For a 6spd car the needed parts were:
1) New Wheel + airbag
2) New controller (to enable the changes in going from plain sport to sport+multifunc+heated)
3) New slip-ring unit to allow all of the signals from the wheel to be transmitted down to the controller.

(the slip ring is a plastic donut shaped part that has a rotating element and in internal cable system that feeds electrical signals from the input interior ring, that can rotate, to the exterior fixed ring into which the controller and car is plugged into)

thanks I have 09 .2 manual trans...
the controller I received from suncoast and my dealer is part #997 613 297 03.. same switch I have in my car now, on the triangular airbag
I haven't tried to do piwis, because I think I need the 10 control switch, for the round airbag

the switch on the 2010 is part #997 613 289 01 I think for pdk and manual..

anyone that might know, the correct part?
thankss

Solrac6262,

You personally replaced the steering wheel, after first removing airbag? Is the steering wheel swap a DIY-level? (I was under the impression that this was dealer-level b/c of airbag concerns.) How hard is the actual swap?

The work is DIY, so long as you follow the right process.
For any such work you need to disconnect the battery and discharge all electrical systems in the car (and wait) to safely pull the airbag.

The only trick in removing the wheel is knowing where the spot is that you have to puncture the current wheel body housing to trigger the release (punch a small hole), and being comfortable with what you should experience when you do so.

Beyond that, if you have to replace the slip ring, which transmits the electrical signals through a rotating mechanism, there is a 'safety pin' in the new parts that lock them in place until they are installed to make sure they don't get misaligned.

Other than that, just remember to position the old wheel top-dead-center straight, and mark the wheel and column where they engage to ensure you put the new wheel on straight again. You may, however, need an alignment afterwords, as the teeth don't always align perfectly.

Now if you are adding multi-function and heating capabilities you didn't have before, a PIWIS is needed to enable the functionality there and in the PCM, so at that point, for me, it was just easier to have the dealer do it.

thanks Ryan,

Ranger, replacing the steering wheel si very easy, the hard part is if you are adding heathed or multifuncion steering wheel to a PDK or manual.. because you need a column switch.. other than that is easy, contact Suncoast, they have all the parts you might need if you decide to DIY
