It's impossible to have driving laws which contain a caveat such as "while you shouldn't pass in most circumstances, you decide what's best." That would create chaos on the roads, particularly since the majority of males behind the wheel truly believe they have above-average driving skills. Sorry, but the rules of the road aren't up for negotiation.

Since you decided to make it personal, I have a question for you. What did you mean that Al Sharpton and I have two things in common? What was the second thing? Just curious.

Pretty much everyone at least exceeds speed limits some of the time, thinking it's safe and unlikely to result in a ticket. So in practice there's some slack and allowance for judgment in obeying and enforcing traffic laws, though I agree that we do need to have clear traffic laws to constrain that judgment.

You're right that people tend to overestimate their driving abilities, and actually studies show that people tend to overestimate most of their abilities (intelligence, leadership, sociability, rationality, etc.), at least in the US.

It isn't personal but rather obvious:

1) Al is short for Alan
2) You hate Guns

You didn't honestly believe I thought you were a Preacher sucking the life and manipulating the poor, or a Social Progressive Liberal that hates the USA, or even a media ***** looking for every opportunity to exploit the black community....did you? That is why I was very careful to say, "two things in common." Sharpton is a staunch advocate of gun control.

This is the kind of thinking that has resulted in folks not even stopping at stop signs any more, or texting or while "parked" in the left lane with the cruise contol on to chat on the phone.

Manifold is a free spirit and a free thinker. He is a Cowboy from the Old West and I like him.

Manifold....you've influenced me to try a double yellow line pass. I'm going to try it after it stops raining.

I'm not disagreeing that bending the rules too far can be unsafe in many situations. I'm just saying that it depends on the situation. Probably, most texting and talking on the phone while driving is more dangerous than most passing while crossing double-yellows, since the former takes attention away from driving while the latter tends to focus attention on driving.

If safety was the only consideration, all traffic laws would be obeyed all the time, but then we'd have no fun either and our beloved Porsche would go out of business.

Guy tells a story, nobody got hurt , everybody at one time or another has broken some sort of traffic law and has had some sort of road rage incident , couple of minutes later....... you laugh about it. Seems to me that some people in this forum need to relax a bit. Most porsche owners are not driving like maniacs texting doing 100mph on freeway with their gun next to them ready to shoot the first person who cuts them off. Can't we all just get along? lol

Hey Man, speak for yourself! This is exactly what I do everyday on the LIE. And if I could find a way to pass those sanctimonious Prius owners on the LEFT while they tool along in the HOV lane I would do that too.

Norton, so here is a tip. I use this all the time when I am driving behind a VOLVO who's driver is poking 11 fingers in his nose holes while driving 24.4 miles per hour in the left lane.
1/ 25 second tailgating.
2/ furious quick pass ( left or right depending on which fingers he has in his nose)
3/ get in front
4/a. Driver is unaware of the situation:
continue and speed up to safe speed.
4/b. Driver is pissed off and increases speed.
Keep at reduced speed until driver catches up.
Then.
Quickly hit brakes, HARD then accelerate HARD.
Volvo driver brakes... car is out of control, wets himself, swerves and has heart palpitations and vowed NEVER to do that again. I
Continue as usual.

For PRIUS drivers : See above.
