Quick question about stock brakes

I have a 2007 Carrera S with stock brakes. When I drive most of the time it makes that screechy sound when im hitting the brakes. I've had them checked and was told that my brakes are still in great condition. What can I do to get rid of this sound?

Do you mean like a high pitched squeal or squeak? I don't know if it is the same situation but I had a squeal on my old '08S and was told it was due to the fact that when you drive around town the brake pads basically develop a glaze on them due to gentle braking. They still work fine but the squeal that you hear is basically vibration probably because the pads are not gripping 100 percent. Apply the brakes hard (not panic stop but firm pressure to slow quickly, or go to the track for a DE) and that might do the trick. For the record on my old 911 the squeal would also go away after washing. Once I started to exercise the brakes/pads the squeal went away.

Someone please correct me if I have erred anywhere in the above. (Similarly, for what it is worth, I get nasty squeal on bicycle brake pads/rims when I use regular pads with carbon fiber rims. After a ride, the pads are not grippy at all and have a smooth glazed texture. They still work but you need to apply more pressure compared to using a proper pad/rim combination.)

Try some strong braking from 60-5 mph a few times. That might "re-bed" the brakes.

Anyone try swapping brake pads with low dusting aftermarkets, like EBC Red Stuff or Hawk ceramics? It's worked for me on other cars.

yep, pad glaze. try some hard stopping in succession. if that doesnt work, you can try flipping the pads inner/outer or left to right, or you can try replacing the noise dampers. all easy DIY's. from what i've seen and read, most folks can get rid of the noise but a few seem to have persistent annoyance.

What are these "noise dampers"? Does anyone have a pic of them? I have a squeal under soft braking in the rear left brake. Starts up after the brakes warm up a bit. Pads look like they still have significant life left.

i dont have a pic but theyre easy to find if you take out brake pads - they are in betw the pads and calipers. each rear caliper has 4 pucks, 2 on each side of the rotor. the fronts have 1 on each side of the rotor and it is a sort of thin metal plate that has small cylinders attached which fit into the caliper. believe me, easy to see if you take out the pads.

Thanks for the info. I assume that stock brakes should come with these dampers? And these dampers are supposed to prevent or minimize squealing when brakes are applied?

I talked to my porsche rep who - as expected - said that these are performance brakes and some squealing is expected. Not sure if I should press him further.

Hey, I brake like a grandpa! +1 on squealing brakes, +1 on Pad Glaze. +1 on going away after a wash or hard braking. I just put up with it now knowing I don't need to unnecessarily wear down my pads just to make the noise go away. The idiosyncrasies we learn to put up with in a p-car.
