Tubi Quality issue????

From hero to zero...so my Tubi exhaust that I purchased from another 6speed member in March just started making a horrendous cracking rattle last week. I had my Indy shop take it off to inspect and unfortunately the drivers side exhaust shows the exact same spiderweb cracking that was discussed in the original thread posted by Angldrkns9 a couple years ago.

https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...ity-issue.html

I've reached out to Champion to see if there is anything they can do, but am not holding my breath as the exhaust is well over the 2 year manufacturer's warranty (which I'm told in nontransferrable anyhow). The exhaust note sounded spectacular when it first went on, but the quality of this "high end" exhuast is leaving that empty feeling right about now...extremely discouraging.

Sorry to hear that. I recently put on the Sharkwerks center bypass and was considering the Tubi sides. I will have to do some more research.

I recommend FVD. Do your research. They use stronger aluminum. Outstanding build quality. Rhonda is excellent to deal with.

Using AWE full system for nearly 6 years, 30K miles. IMO the best. At Tubi prices they should be ashamed.

I have Tubi and love it. 18 months now. Sounds well-seasoned, raspy but not as you described.

Just got mine and love it. Maybe yours was a one off or who knows what happened with the previous owner.

The failure in the linked site looks like intergranular corrosion attack. If the system wasn't produced from a 304L this can happen. The best solution is to use a titanium stabilized grade like 321. It's a material selection issue.

Thanks for the input Alan. I'm still trying to see if there's any chance of an exchange...Champion is suggesting I send it to them and they would weld it. Thoughts?

You posted the pic showing what happened to the weld repairs. What do YOU think?

Research might uncover use of stainless steel for this app.

I wasn't terribly excited about the weld solution, but just ran across a post on Rennlist about a guy who seems to have had some mild success with welding the exhaust...I'm more worried about the inside of the muffler, but maybe it's worth $30-$50 to try and fix it if Tubi won't stand behind it...

I know it's not a PSE but I just had my Tubi repaired for the 2nd time. I bought it used and it had cracks around where the exit pipe (the top pipe which goes to the exhaust tip) connects to the back face of the silencer. These were welded at a local place for a bargin $30 before I fitted it.

A year later I started hearing noises from the back of the car. It was okay when cold but when hot at about 1500 rpm or on lift off I heard a metallic rattle. It was like a lose washer or metal plate vibrating. I had a close look at the silencers and the same silencer had various cracks on the flat surface of the rear of the silencer around the same area. The orignal repair was still good. Went back to same place and $35 later the cracks were welded shut. Car sounds fantastic once again.

John,

If it's not a 304L and has higher carbon content it will be prone to failing in the same fashion. The HAZ, heat affected zone, of the weld is sensitized. The carbon combines with the chrome in the grain boundaries forming chrome carbides. The depletion of the chrome in the grain boundaries is the problem.

If someone attempts a repair a 308L filler wire might help. However, I still think the material would be prone to sensitization.

Heard that my exhaust was manufactured in March 2008 so nothing Tubi will do about the cracks. I'll likely have it welded locally with the 308L filler wire that Alan recommended. A long, long, long shot, but anybody know somebody who is selling just a Tubi drivers side exhaust for a 997.1?
