Finding a Rattle/Squeak
Finding a Rattle/Squeak
$1,000,000 question - anyone know of a way to find a rattle/squeak in car? Its feint but annoying, I have listened carefully but cannot isolate it. Any tips or tricks?
This is my problem too! Anyone can help!!!!
There are so many possibilities, the OP needs to describe more specifically where the noise seems to be coming from, under what conditions, type of sound, etc.
I had a noise that plagued me for over a year before the dealer finally determined the source to be a broken spot weld between the front fender frame and cowl. It took 2 trips to have it repaired properly by the dealer (under CPO). Similarly, for the past couple of years I've had a dull rattle in the right front strut area, but it only showed up after long drives on the highway or freeway, and would disappear again when the car sat for an hour or so. Two dealers and 2 independents couldn't find it. Finally another independent recently found it was the strut itself (which happens to be Bilstein Damptronic). After putting the stock struts back on, there is no more noise. I've arranged for Bilstein to rebuild the 2 front struts. These examples show how difficult it can sometimes be to track down the source of noises.

take a friend, find a section of non-busy road where you can duplicate the sound at will. keep driving back and forth until you all narrow down where it's coming from/what it is. rattles are easy to chase down if you have the time and can duplicate the issue.
I let someone else drive while I sit in the back or passenger seat and listen to suspicious areas with a stethoscope. Once I've found the source, it is usually easy to fix with felt tape.

Careful that the rattle isn't coming from your keys. Lol.
I had a rattle from the rear tray area of my car, and it turned out that the rear seat wasn't engaged on the seat latch post. Just had to click it it. Hope yours is just as easy.
