P-car newbie seeking guidance on 2010 Carrera puchase
I am a long time lurker (sold my RS4 several months ago here) and is in the process of purchasing a 2010 Carrera PDK with 35K miles from my local Porsche dealership (sport chrono, navi, bose). The car is still under factory warranty and has clean carfax report (lease return). Recent service from the dealership includes: new brake fluid, air filter, oil change, cabin filter change and 75% remaining on the brakes. The overall condition on the car is not as clean as I would like it to be (probably needs a full detail).
Question:
Should I get PPI inspection done at the dealership prior to the purchase?
Aftermarket extended warranty (i.e. fidelity, easycare) vs. CPO warranty?
What type of service is required at 30k on P-cars? Next major service?
I appreciate your help.
Ryan

Hi Ryan - Welcome. Did you ask them why they aren't selling the car as a CPO and would they offer it as a condition of sale? Because this is a pcar dealer, and them not performing what in essence is nothing more than a more detailed inspection, is a red flag to me. Not a deal breaker, but would cause me to ask more questions. From your description, the overall condition of the car may be more than cosmetic which has the dealership shy as well.
If I had a choice, I'd rather have a CPO then a 3rd party extended warranty.
No major service at 30K other than oil change. First major service is at 40K.
Good luck.

I just bought an 06 from the dealer and it came with CPO. They did a lot of work to bring it up to standards...about $6,000 total. This is my first Porsche and having it certified brings me a lot of piece of mind. I'd do the PPI.
No, I don't think so. Typically, those things like tires can be easily added to increase the sales price, etc. which are cheap for the dealers. Accidents, poor paint and mechanical/major cosmetic wear and tear seem to be the main reasons why they wouldn't offer a CPO. For example, the first '09 I looked at last year was an average mileage BRG 997S PDK launch car. The car was beautiful, however they didn't have it as a CPO and there really was no further explanation by the dealers as to why. I would just assume that because it had been a launch car and probably had been thrashed mechanically, they were gun shy on offering it.
Bottom line is since CPO was a main criteria of mine - being new to Porsche and buying a $65K 'used' car, I wanted the piece of mind knowing that no matter what problem was wrong with the car, I could show up at the dealer, toss them the keys and say fix it - and I wouldn't see a bill. It is so much easier to love my car instead of worrying that something is going to happen that may taint my opinion of the car/brand.

OP is looking at a PDK. I think the DME is not as much of an issue here as a 6 speed.

Thanks everyone for your input.
The salesman informed me verbally that the car is eligible for CPO status (will need to validate to be sure), but I did not ask specifically why the car was not already CPO'd. I was under the impression the dealership wanted to keep the price low and then offer CPO or extended warranty at an additional cost. I will see if I can get it CPO'd for additional $2k for peace of mind.

Thanks, I thought they offered me a great deal on the car for $57K and $2k additional for CPO would be an exceptional deal. I couldn't find any other 2010's for this price.
Don't come back here without pictures of your new ride and before you have to put her away for the Winter!

I've had my car for 11 months. I still don't know if the windshield wipers work yet!
