IMS failure on way to trade for 991S!!!!
IMS failure on way to trade for 991S!!!!
I am physically sick. Just got word from Bergstrom Porsche in Appleton, WI confirming an IMS bearing failure on my 05 997S. I was driving it up to Bergstrom Porsche to trade for a beautiful 991S. I am 16 days!! out of my Porsche CPO warranty with only 23,580miles!! They are contacting Porsche NA in the morning. General Sales manager Bob Simon has been terrific. I was 460 miles into my 630 mile drive when stopping to pay a toll at the Eden Spur Toll on I94 just north of Chicago I heard the awful clunking of metal. Like nuts and bolts banging around in the engine. I immediately pulled over and shut it down. I get out and look under the car and nothing looks amiss but then comes a stream of oil and it doesn't stop. I called Bergstrom to tell them that I had a mechanical problem and they paid to have it towed the final 170 miles.

Bob @ Bergstrom gave me a loaner Cayenne S Hybrid and guided me to a nice hotel. I flew home today to wait for what happens next. I really am hoping for a good out come here. I guess I am looking for words of encouragement. Please Porsche help a loyal customer realize another dream. Here is the beauty that is waiting for me. Oh how I wanted to leave there in it yesterday.

My gut tells me things will be ok. I hope.

I am new to this forum (recently purchased a 997S) and I must say that "I feel for you" that is a tough deal to be in right now. I hope it all works out for you. Hopefully you'll be in your 991 by this weekend.
Have your Porsche dealer check to see if your VIN is part of the IMS failure 'Class Action'. If an IMS failure occurs before 10 yrs of the in-service date it's my understanding that Porsche will provide some sort of compensation to replace the motor. I believe it has to be an early build 997 to qualify. I think my 997S is covered as it had a very early build date (August 2004).

I know cases like these are rare, but this was the main reason I couldn't do a 997.1 when I was searching for a car. I hope it all works out in your favor! Best of luck!

On the bright side......the dealer will be trying it's hardest to get it fixed under warranty! After all, with it fixed, they will make money on that new car!
Wishing you the BEST outcome!

I think you'll be fine in the end. You are under the best circumstances for a IMS failure. You are barely out of your CPO warranty period and there are stories of Porsche covering the IMS out of good will for those whose warranty just ended. Secondly, you're trading in for another Porsche so that just helps your case out since its money back in their pockets.

Out of ALL the 997.1's on the road what do you think the percentage of IMS failures there are? I bet its not 3%, maybe I am way off. Either way the number is extremely small I think.
Thanks for all the encouragement! Exactly what I needed to hear. I will let you know how things go. I just can't stop thinking about it. I hope PCNA responds quickly and of course favorably.
