Ignition Lock intermittent failure, how to fix?

Hi

Occasionally when I insert the key into the ignition on my 2006 997 C2 the ignition doesn't unlock. When this happens none of the car's electronics turn on and therefore the car won't start. So I take the key out and then put it back in and 90% of the time the ignition unlocks on attempt #2. However this has been happening more and more lately. To the point now that I'm worried its going to fail all together and I'm gonna be stuck out somewhere.

I've heard that there is a such thing as a micro switch that is the cause of this problem. But have been searching around the internet and can't find such a thing for my car. Does anyone know what the correct part is called? Or better yet have a link to it so I can just get this thing ordered and replace it?

Thanks, Derek

The ignition switch was a common failure point on 996s - I had to replace mine once.

Maybe it still is on 997s?

It's a fairly inexpensive part, fortunately.

Also, as a fellow Derek, let me congratulate you on the spelling of your name.

check this diagram. It is part number 2 and you should be able to get it for around 130 USD. Installation, another issue, that might vary based where you get it done.
Hope this helps

I'm a DIY kinda guy, so unless there's some special tool needed I'd handle the replacement myself. The one question I have is about the lock core. Is there a way to keep the one I currently have so I don't have to buy new keys? I haven't seen any up close photos of the ignition switch.

Thanks for the reference.

I think you should be able to switch it, if not you will go to an ind shop and they would work with the key issue. But I think it should be doable.

For what it's worth, I'm having the exact same issue on my '06 C2S. Can you give us a follow up and tell us what it was, what you had to do, etc? Also, the Sonnen link no longer works. Can I get a new one? Thanks so much.

I don't remember which place I bought it at, but it was on the east coast, one of the big online shops.

The hardest part of the job was just figuring out where all the screws were to disassemble the left side of the dashboard so I could get at the old ignition switch. Once it was exposed the rest of the job was really easy. Literally just plug and play. I guess that there is some electronic code in the key itself so there was nothing to do with replacing lock cores.

I've had no ignition problems since I replaced the ignition switch.
