Need help with a strange noise

Have been hearing a metallic ringing sound that is relative to the speed of the car, the slower I go the frequency of the sound occurring decreases, and it picks up in speed as the car increases in speed, so I guess it's something that turns, like a drive shaft or uni joint.

It sounds like it's coming from under the car too.

Its not always there but every now and then I can hear it, its also mostly noticeable at low speeds. High speeds and it disappears.

It's not the rythmic tap tap tap....tap tap... thats a stuck lifter, I know what that is, this is something else.

It sounds like a metal washer being flicked...

I have that sound intermittently on our 2006 Cayenne but never the 911. The sound will disappear for months and then come back for minutes, dealer could never find the issue even though the tech heard the sound. Again, 911 - 2008 Carrera - is daily driver and never experienced that issue.

I d check brakes/wheels first.... maybe jack up and hand spin to see if you hear or feel anything.
Also if you pop it into neutral while coasting does it continue??? Good luck.

Ok so I recorded the sound tonight here it is, actually a great way to describe it is I sound like santa clause

I tried shifting to neutral while I heard it and that didn't' stop the noise so I am confident the issue is with the wheel or brakes.

Santa is the perfect way to describe that, sorry. I've had a similar sound on a non-997 before and it was because of small rocks being stuck between the caliper and the rotor or between the heat shield and the rotor. Generally I was able to fix it by slamming on the brakes hard in an empty rock lot so that I would get extended brake application while also not coming to a near complete stop immediately.

If something simple like above doesn't fix anything, I really like Cerbomark's idea of jacking the car up and spinning the wheel. Also, you could remove the wheel the wheel and look for debris and damage around the rotor, caliper, and heat shield. Those heat shields are pretty easy to bend and also pretty easy to get debris stuck behind.

Thanks I just took it to one of those self wash bays and used a high pressure hose and pointed it point blank inbetween the pad and rotor for a while, and also all over the brake and disc. Hopefully that dislodged anything that was in there.

If it comes back I will jack the car up and take the wheel off to see what I can see.

yea, after hearing your sound post I d say it s in the brakes. Check all the pads etc...
Shouldn t be a big deal.
You can even jack up and spin with wheels on until you find which wheel it is.
Just though of something else, LOL, when it s making the sound step on the brake and if it goes away it s almost for sure in the brake pads. Keep your right foot on the gas and lightly use the left foot to drag the brake.
