oil leaks
oil leaks
hi, guys, my car is 2007 997.1 turbo. I just found out that my car has a oil leaks at rear left side (close to exhaust at left side). It looks like the leaks coming out form a bolt, but I am not sure. Could anybody tell is this serious problem and will cost a lot to repair? Thank you very much in advance for your advise.
I think a lot of that yellow stuff is cosmoline, which is a coating that it leaves the factory with. Have you been monitoring your oil levels? There's definitely some grime built up under there; it wouldn't hurt to get it de-greased and keep an eye out for oil seepage.
If you want to remove the cosmoline for some reason (I wouldn't as it's a protectant) there's a thread on 6spd here: https://www.6speedonline.com/forums/...e-removal.html

Oil leak source can be hard to pinpoint. Where the oil ends up can be some distance away from where the actual leak is.
One needs to get the car in the air and with a bright light and even a mirror on a stick/swivel give the engine a real good check to see where the oil originates. In some cases one has to get from under the car to above and look at the engine higher up.
The leak doesn't look bad. A general rule is the leak is not that bad -- but this is of course relative -- if no oil hits the ground or fouls other hardware. Another rule I use is if the leak is bad enough to clean away any cosmoline or wash away the grime (dirt/dust) oil collects then the leak is bad enough to address.
However, I still think you should take the time and make the effort to get this leak source id'd and at least know what it means -- if anything -- and what it would take to address it.

I might have one drop on the floor, as I always parked same spot in my garage and I noticed there was a oil mark on the floor.
When I found out the leaks, there were quite a lot oil/dirt mix in the red circle area and also the metal pipe at bottom of the picture. I have wiped these oil/dirt out.
Can anybody advise which parts this one is? And which oil I should check? The engine oil seems OK, but I don't drive a lot.
and I thought the leaks always come down form higher spot to lower spot. I didn't see any oil residual higher than that bolt, so I guess the leaks might coming from this bolt (I could be very wrong). However, the leaks could come from this connection, as I remembered this area had a lot more oil and dirt residual. What do you think??
myself Id get some type cleaner around worst areas and see how it goes after its clean.....if there is a leak you will be able to pinpoint it

I drove about 100km today and there was some fresh oil around the bolt. is it simply just tighten the bolt to fix this issue? And I am not sure if the metal pipe connection leaks or not, as there is also oil (but it could come down form above).
