Brake / Rotor Advice

I have 31K miles on my 2005 997. It's my daily driver and don't drive it too hard at all. My "brake wear" light went off and so I took it to the dealer and here's his email:

"Dear Nick,
Regretfully your front brakes are low and should be addressed. Your brake pads are down to 3mm, within the next mm your brake pad warning light will go off, requiring replacement. Your front rotors are within .5mm of being below spec, and should be replaced.

Front brake pads, sensors, & rotors approx cost $977.48. If you opt not to do rotors, just pads and sensor for front approximate cost $501.82. Porsche also recommends flushing brake fluid every 2 years regardless of mileage, cost $212.00."

Are new rotors at 31K miles normal? Do I need to flush my brake fluid? Is the price too high? Thanks in advance.

I have a little over 10k miles on my car and changed the front pads (I had a couple track days). I think the prices they quoted you are a bit (a lot) high. I picked up OEM parts from Jeff@Sunset Porsche.

Front pads (set of 4 pads) cost me: ~160$
Sensors Cost (set of 2) me: ~50.00

I installed them at home, it took a total of 20 minutes to put them in.

Front Rotors should run about ~140$ a piece. Bringing the grand total of parts to 500$ before labor.

I usually flush my brake fluid once a year; or before a track day .. I tend to boil them and its extra insurance. You probably need about 1 - 2 liters to flush the system; and that should run at ~30$ for quality brake fluid (Or 150$ if your running Castrol SRF).

Does that include install or just parts?

should be parts and installation.
all of this stuff is easy diy and I have done exactly what mishref said previously with my 996 without any problems. I used the motive power bleeder for the flush.
renntech.org has all the instructions.

I ordered a set from Sunset as well. Same price as mentioned by Mischref. I also track my car.

Mischref, did you replace the dampers and repair kit ( bolts, springs, securing clips)? Or just re-use them?
Thx

I don't have any problems changing my brake pads, but have no experience with changing out rotors. Anyway, I got them to do it for around $800 parts and labor (without the flush).

Thanks.

I haven't done the rotors on my 911. But I have done them on numerous other cars. It is easy.

the whole thing is actually easier if you do the rotors and flush too.
The hardest part about changing the pads is removing the old ones that arent worn out enough to just slip out.
So you have to get out some brake fluid and use some force to push the pistons...
I dont remember changing the spring clip set...

I reused them; At 10k miles I only replaced the Pads/Sensors.

rotor replacement

I have about 40K on 2006 997 C2. When I visited the dealer for a regular check up for 40K, I was told that all 4 brakes need to be replaced. Two front rotos and pads at about 1.6K, and two real rotors and pads at about 1.8K. Thamakes all together 3.6K including parts and labor.

I am wondering if this sounds right, or I need to have a second opinion... Your advise will be highly appreciated..

As my company warranty is over, I do not need to go to the dealer and may need to find an independent specialist for P.
Chong....

I think the OP was asking whether new rotors at 31K was within the norm. Like a clutch, there is a huge range based on use, environment, etc., but I think it is within the norm. You might be able to shave a bit off if you shop around, but assuming you trust these folks, get it done.

Speaking of rotors - is there any opinion about this product?

Buy OEM, I purchased a few sets of Fronts for $300US (for the pair), and they will work with your car. There is no guarantee that these will work.
