Question on Aftermarket Exhaust Sound at Idle

Hi Guys,

Hoping to get some opinions/insights here regarding my Fabspeed MaxFlow exhaust....So not looking for anything other than what the sound may be and/or if it is normal...

So when I start the car in the garage it appears to sound like there is a very slight "chirp" for lack of terms. Almost like a subtle belt chirp, but coming from the exhaust area....Seems to be noticeable when Sport button is on and usually not at all when Sport is off. Also, when moving/accelerating...nothing..

So my thinking is that the new exhaust/ 200 CPI Cats are allowing me to hear an exhaust note not there before? That is what it sounds like anyway...

Anyone else hear this or experience this? I thought a leak, but again...only hear at idle and in Sport mode.....Rev it up and it goes away...

Thanks in advance for thoughts and/or speculation

alwaysturbos is infamous around these parts
Hey,

I have a Fabspeed Xpipe that had 200 cell cats on it and then I changed them to the bypass pipes. Anyhow, when I got the bypass pipes, turbos, and intercoolers installed (months after the exhaust), I began getting this chirp as well. I brought it up to the guys who did the install and they said it was nothing. A few weeks later I got an CE light. Long story short, the chirp is an exhaust leak. In my case it was a leak between the turbo and header. Even though a leak may not sound like a major issue, it takes away from your cars performance and can develop in other/larger issues later on. Take it to a good shop and have them check it out. GL

Thanks for the info! Was hoping it was not a leak I installed everything and as you suggested was fine for a while....I will pull it apart and check again for leaks. I did put headers and Forge aluminum Diverter Valves on also...So will check it all

OK...Follow up just in case it helps anyone in the future.

I jacked the car back up and made sure all the Fabspeed exhaust components and clamps were tight and sealed. I then removed the aftermarket headers and re-installed the OEM Porsche headers and made sure I had them nice and tight....No more chirp! It was in fact, likely the header to turbo flange that was not seating well with the aftermarket headers I had.

Also, I had previously posted about a sputter/hesitation after exhaust install at high boost...That seems to have smoothed out as well, so it could have had to do with the exhaust leak jacking something up with my computer etc...

Hope this helps someone who may have similar problem(s).

While some are very well made, there is very little if any hp gain from aftermarket headers. Glad you got it figured out.

Yep....Agreed. The OEM's seem very well made and balanced very well. The larger collector and flange at the turbo on aftermarkets make it extremely difficult to install and get a wrench in there....at least on mine....and others I have seen. OEM's are relatively easy to mount up...

I am not messing with them anymore
