Earlier today after leaving work I was exiting onto an on-ramp and felt a sudden loss of power and some popping. (almost like the car was misfiring) I immediately let of the throttle and the car died as I pulled over on the side of the highway. I got out to see underneath the car and saw oil dripping from the center crank casing. The rear under-tray was not on so I was able to see where the oil was coming from. I took a cloth to wipe the bottom of the crankcase (right where the bolts connect the case together) and noticed about a 4" thin crack running down the center right at the bottom. The oil was leaking only from this location at the very bottom of the engine. I had the car towed home. I checked the oil level earlier in the day and it was normal. We added oil in the car to see if there is any oil pressure and there is none. The car turns over and sounds okay. However it does not run if given a little bit of throttle the car will run but then we heard clunking noises and immediately turned the car off. Something definitely wrong internally with the motor. What are my options? Anyone know of any good Porsche shops in the chicagoland area ?Where Can I find used turbo motors?
Depending on the extent of damage, I wouldnt mind building/fixing my current motor (just rods pistons studs etc) Who is a reputable engine builder?

What year is your car? And how many miles did you have on your car? But does sound like a new engine. It does sound as if your transmission is fine. Could you at least engage a gear before she stalled out? Good luck. Doesn't sound great. Try and contact your nearest Porsche Dealership. I'm sure they could give sound advice on how to proceed with this problem.

Hope you get it all resolved. Having being in the same boat a few months ago, there is very little to be said, except, that, it will get better.
I will keep an eye for a motor - they are certainly hard to come across and not cheap at all.

For sure a blown motor - sucks to hear.
In chicago I'd say just take it to AMS and have an upgraded motor built for you, they should be able to source a new block.
If you pay for Porsche to put a full OEM long block in, it will actually be more expensive than having an upgraded aftermarket short block built and any head damage repaired. I'd expect somewhere in the 25-30k range for the repair and work.
The only silver lining for you is that you'll be able to push a ton of power through the engine once it is upgraded.

Thus you are faced with sourcing a replacement engine from the factory or an engine salvaged from a wrecked car. (There are possibly two other well, possibilities: One is you buy an engine already built from an engine shop. Two is you explore the, errr possibility of installing a non-Porsche engine in the car. I'm thinking, of course, of installing say a GM V8 engine into the car.)
Whether you have the salvaged engine gone through by an engine shop before you install the engine in the car is up to you.
If you go with the salvage engine, a case could be made to first install the salvaged engine as is, drive the car a while and verify the engine is ok, then pull the engine and have it rebuilt. This way you have some higher level of confidence the replacement engine is a good rebuild candidate.

Given the presence of oil under the engine from the crack in the cases the odds are very high the engine is not a viable rebuild candidate.

Its a 07 and I had about 85k on the motor. The trans was fine

Thanks Bud regardless Im going to go the built motor route. Ive heard I can use the 996 short block. I hope my heads are not damaged. I personally believe the rod bent and took a ****. But we will know soon when I get her opened up.

more details on what turbos you have, fueling and who tuned the car. also how long did it run upgraded turbos before breaking the motor.

But you are in a unique position to educate and serve the community by spending a few minutes detailing your mods, power levels, build details including anything you believe would help inform others who are going down the route of modifying their cars. As others have said these blocks are typically bullet proof, so when you say you were "pushing it to the limit", would be very helpful to understand the details.
