Keep in mind that some motorcycle helmets may be fine for karting but not for auto racing. Make sure that you find a helmet that complies with the rules of the highest circuit you will be racing in.

Why motorcycle helmet isn't always good for car racing? Any feature or construction of helmet that doesn't work well for cars?

I have 4-5 motorcycle full face helmets. They do limit visibility since they are full face.

Auto racing helmets are fireproof, motorcycle helmets and kart helmets generally aren't.

Think about it, if god forbid you crash a car and it catches on fire, you're stuck inside it while on a motorcycle or kart if you crash you generally end up outside it, or at least you can get away / off of it with no obstruction.

Exactly... Same goes with driving suits/gloves vs karting suits/gloves. No need for nomex and other expensive fire-proof features when you will be tossed from the kart.

Don't buy a used helmet, I did once, guy told me that it had been worn on one track event only. He must have sweated buckets and all into the helmet. It stank! So $175 down I bought a new one.
The problem with used helmets is that if they've simply been dropped you can't always see the damage, it's your head, it really is the thing you should spend most money on, after all when you pile the kart, car or bike you won't be thinking about the $150 you saved. Trust me I saw my 6 year old pile his kart under a trailer at Infineon, his helmet was cracked in the impact, I really am glad I spent money on a well fitting new lid, it probably saved his life!
Buy a Bell, great value, great helmet. Buy the best you can afford, get the latest Snell Rating, one day it might have to save your life
