Another Zo6 Roof Bites The Dust

"after a quick race with one of the windows 1/4 the way down, the roof almost fell apart over my head that is... I started hearing noise from the roof while crusing at like 70Mph a few days ago, and I ordered a new roof possibly a revised version, which is getting painted at the moment.

Is this normal? I mean i didnt even hit 3rd gear, how would the car feel at 200+ mph? would it not fall apart, into peices? btw if you checked out the roof screws, they are actually plastic, I cant imagine that!!!"

It has been a notorious problem with all C6's since they came out. It is not just the Z06. Keep in mind the price tag is half of the 997 TT price. You are paying for pure performace and sometimes to keep the price low GM sacrifices fit and finish. All their money goes into an incredible engine and drivetrain, outstanding suspension, and light weight parts.

Every time I mention it in the Z06 vs. Turbo threads, the Vette guys remind me that GM fixed it. Sounds exactly how I would expect GM to fix things...

That's what kills me about that car - I love the engine, I love how it looks on the outside, I love the performance. But how in the F$#% am I going to spend $70K or so on a car with a crap interior and poor build quality??? I mean, my Evo had a pretty dumpy interior, but it still had Recaros, Momo wheel, etc. and it was built like a tank.

I have no issue with fit and finish shortcuts - but safety?

The corvettes have excellent safety ratings. You can find the ratings over the internet or even just call your insurance company. When I went from my bmw 325ci to my corvette my insurance went down because the vette had a superior safety rating. I was very surprised.

Hmmm, that is surprising. I can't believe Corvettes are involved in fewer accidents than a low-end BMW. A Corvette, like any sports car, is going to attract drivers who are more likely to speed and take risks. GM's stability control systems are decent, but nowhere near the quality of BMW's (I know, I have both).

I suspect the drop in insurance may have been driven by probability of theft as much as anything else. Also, BMW parts are more expensive, so the cost to repair the minor fender benders that suck up a decent chunk of insurance payouts are going to be lower in the Vette.

The safety issue comment was less to do with crash ratings, and more to do with the inherent danger of your roof flying off at speed to a) other road users, and b) the aerodynamic stability of the car itself.

My guess is because 3 series coupes are wealthy teenager cars, guys and girls. They get the reputation from insurance companies as not the best drivers. In addition to what PMac said.
