Cost to own?
really reasonable. if you plan for $1500/yr in maintenance, not including tires, you'll be fine. last year my annual maintenance was $800-something. the year before that was $1400-something.
repairs out of warranty can get expensive and the time waiting for parts can be lengthy, depending on what is needed. but all in all, the running costs really aren't bad at all.

these cars are pretty stout and don't have too many real problems. i've driven the **** out of mine and it just keeps asking for more.
main costs you'll encounter are tires and clutches. the clutch is what usually shocks people, but i've driven my pretty hard and it's still going very strong. so i'm not sure how people wear theirs out so quickly.
but all in all, it's the best bang-for-your-buck to own exotic around, i think.

the clutch had 2k miles on it when i bought the car, and i've put another 16-17k or so on it in the last year and a half. so about 18-19k miles (29-30k km), give or take. includes road trips, city driving, rain or shine, and a couple days of HPDE.

Mine has been really reliable so far (had it almost a year). Maintenance items are pretty simple to do on this car however the part prices are a bit laughable. A set of brake rotors is 2k, oil filter will run you around $65 and a set of air filters over $200!! I service my car myself so it takes the sting out of having someone else do the work. They are fun cars to own.
My '06DB9 has been very affordable. I get it serviced at the dealer - an annual runs about $1800, although independent shops are less expensive. I have had no problems whatsoever with mine. It had less than 2k miles when I bought in 2011 and is just under 10K now. I'm trading it on a new 2012 Virage. Love these cars.
Don't forget about brakes and rotors. Somehow these last half as long as you expect and cost twice as much as you expect.
So: yearly maintenance + clutch + brakes pads + rotors + tires = normal maintenance costs.

very true, good point. There are those that have been *****smacked by a big repair bill and those that will. Not complaining, just the cost of admission. I, too, do a lot of my own work but sometimes I just want to say, "It's all yours, boys."
If you're going through a clutch, set of tires, brake rotors, and brake pads more than once every few-to-several years, you're doing something wrong (or racing, at which point you should expect those costs).
The $1500 is a general rule of thumb for a V8 Vantage, which is the closest comparable car to the OP's 911. He asked about the effect of an AM on his budgeting, so I gave him the normal cost of maintenance. ANY car will have major costs involved for serious repairs.
