knocking noises in 1 st and rev

Hi all,

Can anybody tell me if this is a fault or normal,2008 v8 vantage sportshift when in 1 st gear when taking off car makes a funny noise in back wheels or shafts as if it were a some old type of of car this also happens in reverse this sounds like backlash, you do not expect this from a car like this and where I come from they are extra expensive I paid 125,00 euros for it.

thanks all

If it sounds like a bunch of marbles rattling in a coffee tin then, yes, this is normal.

Don't be so hard on them. Marbles in a can is common on transaxle cars with a manual. Caused by too low revs on take up, and the driveshaft rumbles in its bearings. This is common on the Z06, for example. Solution is to use more revs from a stop.

Now if its driveline clunking that you are describing, that's not normal.

I dropped my V8V off with the dealer yesterday for a few minor warranty issues and the grinding noise was one of them. Service Mgr said it's "normal" but like the OP said, I think it's unacceptable. I purchased my car sight unseen so wasn't aware of the noise. Prior to my purchase, I drove an '08 stick and '11 SS and didn't notice any noise from them.

irish07 posted this in another thread and wondered if anyone has tried it "The halfshalf spline noise are usually from a start..if this concern was present, go from reverse then foward and splines will make this noise..repair is to remove halfshaft from rear hubs and apply green locktite on splines then fit a new halfshaft nut and torque to spec.."

Also, would going with a different weight or type of fluid help?

The halfshaft noise would not be solved by changing types of fluids or fluid weight...this noise I mentioned is in the spindle/hub/splined section..

Whats the concern you are having right now..plz give info and year of vehicle also..or last 6 digits of VIN

Here you go Irish... '13 V8V, stick with 1,300 miles. VIN C17351. I understand exotics have their quirks but this gringing is annoying. Is this an inherent trait of all AMs and does the fix you mention stop the noise or just reduce it? The serv mgr indicated it was normal and usually occurs when cold but mine doesn't go away once warmed up. If there is a fix, why don't dealers do it? Is this something that can be done relatively easily as a DIY? Any input would be greatly appreciated.
