Those of you with CPO / Third Party Warranties... use them much?

If you've been following the other thread I have here, you know I'm in the process of closing on an 08' V8V. The PPI is happening tomorrow, and Fil @ Napletons Aston Martin filled me in on the CPO warranty prices today:

12 mos, unltd miles: $4,182.00
24 mos, unltd miles: $7,420.50

I would have been on board if the 12 mos was 2500 and the 24mos was 4500, but do these prices seem ridiculously high to anyone else? I read a few other threads here where some people had good experiences with third party warranties, but it seems many of those companies don't cover Aston Martin. Fil said I'd need to decide whether or not to buy the coverage before the car left the lot after the PPI, so I'd like to do some research and see if you have a CPO warranty, have you used it much? I noticed it doesn't cover *a lot* of things, oil leaks included. One year CPO people, have you gotten $4,000 value out of your warranty? It is transferable, so that's nice, but not if I sold it back to a dealer.

The car has 17.5k miles and if the dealer basically says it's in CPO shape anyways... my point is that I didn't even know they'd offer to sell me one, and I was okay buying a non-warrantied car that passed the CPO inspection. Now my thoughts are all spaghetti-like and I wanted to gather your thoughts!

My opinion.... the AM warranty does have lots of exclusions from wear items etc. I wasn't charge.d anything for the one year warranty on my car, but it was a big selling point for me. BUT I wouldn't have paid 4-5k for it.

My thought, get the in depth ppi, try to get the service/warranty history (see if it had the oil seal replaced). If it passes the inspection, I'd be inclined to go without the warranty. just my 2 cents.

I find it very hard to justify the high cost of those warranties.

Did the 08's have the front timing chain cover leak? I thought I read somewhere that was resolved late MY07 but I could be dead wrong. Also, the warranty doesn't cover "oil leaks", but I've heard of people getting this issue repaired under warranty. I assume that's under the new car warranty?

I'm leaning towards passing as well... it seems quite prohibitively expensive, and while issues on this car aren't cheap, I'd have to need tons of repairs (that were actually covered) for it to make sense. I'm not hurting financially, so it may make more sense to roll the dice.

slayer of souls is infamous around these parts
I did my research on the warranties, and honestly, the way it is designed in canada, most major services e.g., clutch repair will not be covered.

If you dont follow their procedures exactly, your warranty will be void. Not getting oil changes every number of kms or days could potentially void your warranty. Not worth it in my opinion.

Sorry, I forgot it was an 08.

Yeah, probably just keep the $4k as a slush fund for anything that MIGHT crop up. I think the in depth ppi will help give you peace of mind.

Yeah, just saw that another member had an 09' with the issue. I'll make sure Fil @ Napletons knows to look for it and see if it's been completed.

On aston extended warranty is complete waste of money... On a Mercedes AMG it is worth it's weight in Gold lol.

You don't need warranty, and if anything ever did go wrong it would most likely be a wear & tear which would not be covered anyways (clutch, brake pads & rotors, etc).

You are better saving that money for another purpose

I have an '08 V8V and had them check carefully for Oil Leaks before Warrantee ran out--No Leaks, and the front-cover seal was never replaced.

I bought the extended warranty, after the factory warranty ran out, and never used it once. So with hindsight perhaps I didn't need to spend the $4k, especially as I had the car for a good time beforehand and knew the history. That said, if I was buying a car that I didn't have experience of, then I would strike the best deal possible to get the warranty included or at subsidized cost. You never know what's around the corner or what's been cleaned up with brake cleaner.....

Guess I'm the exception. I bought an 08 last year (13k mi), Aston dealer PPi, with Aston dealer service records. I got a 1yr warranty ($2800) which I was very happy for. I had the following issues fixed:

Front timing chain oil leak (occurred at approx 15k)
2 oxygen sensors, at different times
AM radio module replacement
IPOD interface quit (can't remember the fix)
Thermostat replaced (admittedly a cheap repair)

Im generally opposed to extended warranties, however the oil leak repair made the warranty decision a good one. YMMV

I was under the impression that the pre-owned warranty doesn't cover oil leaks. Did you get an extension to the factory warranty, or a CPO warranty? This car isn't for sale at an AM dealer, but they're inspecting it and offering to sell me the warranty if it passes their 4-hour inspection. That may be the difference, but the sheet specifically says no oil leaks... I wonder if there's an exception for this leak (but still, at $4,500 for the 1 yr, that's the cost to repair it... so I would only get value if more things went wrong. Which, in your example it did, but it seems more people haven't had to utilize it than had.)

I think this is the one case where I'd recommend getting an extended warranty. If you buy a car that has not yet had this done, the warranty might be very worthwhile.
