Convertible Top Malfunction

I have an 06' Volante and the top suddenly stopped working.

It is in the closed position and when I activate the lower button, the front unlatches and opens a few inches, and the windows lower. That is where it all stops. The rear tension bow does not rise. I hear no pumps running. It will close back and latch with no problems. I have checked the boot fusebox and all appear ok. Does anyone know where the pump relay is located or have any other ideas?

It is not giving any error codes.

So I think I have narrowed it down to the pump relay. As I said before, when I go to open the top it stops as soon as the windows roll down and the hood is released. I noticed when I lower it back, I can hear the pump motor power up to close it. The schematics show the motor has a RH and LH mode with 2 relays. I am hoping that is where my problem lies. It is hard to tell, but can anyone confirm that those relays are located in the pump assembly in the rear wheel well?

You probably already know this, but the workshop manual shows the control module for the roof as located under a plate in the LH wheel arch.

Yes, I have that. Thanks though! I also have the Convertible top manual. I plan on working on it tomorrow. I hope it is just a relay. I can see the pump working in one direction and not the other. Possible, but it seems more likely the whole thing would go out.

I will post my findings.

It's quite common for faults with the convertible roofs to be traced to fried control units.
I'd try a complete power off reset, disconnect it from the loom for 30 mins
Might be worth trying another control unit if you can

So I tested the relays this weekend and they worked. I found that after the hood (front) opens, I could lift the tension bow(rear window part) up and the system would go ahead and finish opening the top completely. It closes with no problem. I am not sure the latch sensors also send a signal to the control unit. So it it looking more like the Control Module.

Does anyone know if the sensors in the header for the latches also send a signal to the control unit to show they are open?

Thanks

Well a couple of hours at the dealership with no luck. They re-programmed the module and I watched them hook it up on the PC that was showing all sensors working. They said it would take them several hours of trouble shooting to find the issue. I'm gonna do a little of my own before I spend some more $$$$.

You noted that you have the convertible top manual. I assume you mean the "Technical Guide - Convertible Roof System - Electronics Training Programme" downloaded from the AM tech site? If not, I have that...

If you don't have any fault messages on the DIC and all systems as far as windows and radio working normal then it's not the control module for the top. You said with assist of rear bow, top will complete the cycle. If there are no codes for sensors then you have a hydro pressure problem. The front header is gear drive that's why that works. you need a new pump. Comes as a whole assembly.

I would tend to agree with that. The pump works in one direction, but not the other. I have tested the relays and they are working fine. I plan to delve into it tomorrow a little more.

Well its not the pump. It works in both directions. I am left with a new RCM. Anyone have a good source?

Update

So wouldn't you know after all the troubleshooting and ordering a new control module, the top just started working on its own. So if anyone needs a brand new roof control module in the box, send me a PM.

Shock of SHOCKS!!! I decided to try and wing it. I pulled fuse #10 from the boot/trunk fuse block. The manual says its for the top control unit.

The fuse was out for about 30-40 minutes, while I did other stuff. I then put the fuse back in, started the car, and HOLY COW, the top worked fine!

It didn't work for the past few weeks since I resuscitated it from its winter horror
