Sport button
The sport button on ANY Automatic---- The button changes the pre-set shift points on the transmission (however under full throttle nothing changes either way; so if your in non-sport and you mash the throttle, you will get the same power output and shift points as in Sport Mode)
IN some vehicles the throttle sensitivity changes some, and in most sport cars the exhaust flaps open up sooner or stay open all the time. Depends on manufacturer.
Not a dumb question---- most people don't know exactly what the button does, such as the AM salesperson telling me to hit that button and I will have more horsepower and the car will be faster. Good selling technique for an idiot.
IF I am wrong anywhere in this posting, I am open to the specifics of AM's on this, but it will do nothing to upset the balance or drivability of the car.
Oh, forgot one thing----- cars with automatic suspensions, air bags etc.... the button will typically tighten up the suspension damper settings also. Not sure if later model or new model AM's have them, don't thing so but could be wrong on the Vanquish, DB11 etc...
Thanks for the responses! I have a manual, so I assume pressing it while accelerating will just make it louder and faster
For some reason I never used it unless ready to go at a stop.

On my DB9, not louder or faster in sport mode. In my opinion the sport button is a waste, the ecu keeps the car in a lower gear and seems to shift at the same rpm as non-sport mode. Does not allow car to go into 6th gear at higher speeds which is just dumb in my opinion.
Manual? Like the book?
NO it doesn't make anything faster. If you have the throttle maxed, the valves for the exhaust are open above 3k anyway, so it wont make the car louder either.
Your throttle shift point under regular throttle are changed, to a higher RPM.
Like was mentioned, it also prevents 6th gear usage.
Your car has 450hp or so stock. That power is available at any time by the push of your right foot. The sport button does not make your car all of a sudden have more HP. IF the exhaust is not affected by the Sport button on the DB9, then the button for all intents and purposes worthless IMHO. That would be the only reason for it, in real world driving. Its a gimmick.

Personally I like the throttle mapping changes that sport makes.
With a manual car, I'm much less likely to stall in reverse, since sport mode makes the throttle more sensitive / rev sooner.
As stated before, on the manual vantage, sport mode changes the throttle mapping and opens the exhaust flaps sooner. That's it.
I wish the manual cars had a setting to default sport mode on, like the sport shift cars do. as it is I always reach over and press sport after starting the car.

Anyway I think most misunderstood my question - just wanted to know if it was ok to press the sport button while accelerating on the throttle

On my SportShift 15 GT my Sport Button is always on once I press it - on my buddies 14 Vantage it does not stay on. It makes a huge difference in driving enjoyment with the SportShift, likely not so much with a manual, but the sound is nicer.
