Rebuild? If your thinking about a pump replacement, buy a new pump....

hey Argus,

I had a serpentine belt replaced last year due to some cracking spotted in the belt - water pump was replaced - think it was a few hundred from the local AM dealership.

Hey Vantagelvr,

Agree with the sentiment - I was surprised when it was suggested, however, I think it's more to do with "while I'm down there" type logic. Considering the damage that could happen to the engine if the water pump was affected by a bad serpentine belt etc - I had no issue in replacing it (other than adding a few dollars).

Both the belt and the pump will go 100k miles. Well the belt will squeal before then, but not wear out. Plus the pump is very reasonable.

I'm a big fan of "while I'm down there" logic. 😉

Although this may make sense with some things, mostly consumable items; I'm not a proponent of changing a known good component for an unknown. Especially a dynamic component.
I'm in aviation and this is not a regular practice on aircraft. Obviously cost prohibitive but also could cause other maintenance induced failures.

while i would generally agree with you in principle... components that are known wear items, or parts that would generally be removed during the course of other work could and should be replaced, especially if it's an accessory item like a water pump.

obviously you wouldn't tear apart an engine to replace parts that 'might' fail...
