DB9 Waterpump replacement

Hi,

AM is very proud of their waterpumps. Usually waterpumps fail when the seal fails and the pump leaks excessively, and/or the plain bearing corrodes/wears.

Looking around for someone to inspect/repair/make new my AM waterpump, I found Kellog Automotive in Maricopa, AZ. For $200.00 delivered, Marc replaces the seal, bearing, shaft and impeller. My first time using him, but given what a royal pain it is to replace the pump once the motor is back in the car, I took this time to rebuild it.

The pump is (no surprised) derived from a Jaguar waterpump but uses a custom housing to fit in the space available in the DB9. It is this custom housing that makes it expensive.

Best
Larry

Your money, your choice. YMMV.

Wait till you see how I rebuilt the motor using stock ford parts bought from ford instead of buying stock ford parts from AM...

Excellent......Someone with the skill and know how should feel good about knowing how to work the system. The rest of us have to pay the piper.

Are the rest of the components the same? The impeller, bearings etc..? Do you know which Jag pump? I bet you could just swap the bits over with a press at home.

All the JAG pumps look similar, but because of the way they are made, you can't easily swap out the seals and the bearings. I didn't feel bad getting Marc to renovate it, given what a PITA it is to replace.

Yes the housing is a PITA to replace, but the pump itself is 4 bolts after the pulley is removed and can be done in the car. That ultra expensive pump is also a FoMoCo off of the mighty modular 4.6/5.4 which reman ones are at every corner auto parts store for $50.

Thanks for that tip. When I looked at them online I convinced myself that it was a different pump (bolt pattern looked different).

Aston Part 4G43-05-10957 (no. 11 in the picture) is a Ford part, e.g. Motorcraft PW423. Looks like the impeller design has gone through several updates over the years. $500 for Aston, $35 for Motorcraft.

That is great to know.

Any idea what the ford replacement is for part 2 above?
