Can someone tell me in what year the ZF 8 speed was used with W12 engine?
Hello @Sapphire Blue ,
Welcome aboard to 6speedonline !
As far as the ZF 8HP-90, it depends on which model Bentley you are referring to, IIRC the 8HP was available in the 2011 Mulsanne (although a V8) and in the 2012 GT (W12) Speed, along with the 2013 Flying Spur W12 to start off with.
So, which particular model are you looking for the information on ?

I'm looking for a Continental GT. (USA) I just found an article that says All MY13 will get the 8spd and enhanced engine management (Car Scoops Aug 22/2012)
Hello @Sapphire Blue ,
So are you looking to get the 8 speed, or the 6 ?
I have not read the article you referenced, but in my research during my GT rebuild I had quite a few phone calls with Bentley headquarters, and the folks at Flying Spur's, as I was searching to verify which year the "CVA" W12 engine actually came from, as it was to be a 2014, as was the matching ZF 8HP-90 eight speed transmission in the package I purchased, I was told by Mark via Craig at Flying Spur's through Clive at Bentley as shown below in the attached picture, the engine could be from a late 2013 GT, as it was available from 2013.5 for the GT, I took this information and called Bentley HQ to double check and to get some clarification as to tying it down to the exact year so I could be correct when selling it, if that came to be, the Bentley representative stated that the 2013 GT had the 6 speed transmission for the first half, with the BWR (IIRC) engine, then the 8 speed up to current date (as we were speaking back in July/August of 2016) was with the CVA engine, so she concluded that I had a 2014 setup by the manufacturer codes of 26/09/13 .
If you want the 8 speed, just be sure to move the shifter over to manual mode to display the numbered gears in the Instrument cluster, like my 6 speed Supersports ZF 6HP-28 transmission does.
Hello @molphar ,
That was my thinking when I first purchased the package of engines and transmissions that included the 2014 W12TT engine, and the 2014 ZF 8HP-90 eight speed transmission, I was going to use in my 1st Gen GT rebuild.
The ZF 8HP-90 is longer than the ZF 6HP-26 by over an inch or so iirc, the 8HP-90 also has a different tail shaft/output shaft connection for the mounting of the driveshaft/prop shaft compared to the 6HP, therefore my 1st Gen driveshaft word not work, I found a Bentley GT driveshaft/prop shaft to fit the 8HP-90 and the seller took the measurements to confirm the length, it was the inch plus shorter, I just don't recall the exact measurement at this moment, but did confirm that it would fit the 1st Gen GT back then.
My next issue was the CAN-BUS and the fact the the 1st Gen instrument cluster only shows 1st through 6th gear, and I am sure the center display is just like a TV screen, but wasn't sure if coding or firmware/software, and CAN-BUS language would cause big problems, and as I surely did not want to go through a complete installation of the engine and transmission to find out, I scraped the idea and went with a 2011 Supersports engine and ZF 6HP-28 quick shift transmission package, with matching ecu's and instrument cluster all from the same vehicle, so I know 8HP-90 fitment is good, just not so sure on the electronics / software side.
thank you! Your answer and this info is really important!!! As far as i know 8 gear i also quickshift, but im not shure how it will work with 1 gen ECU.
Now im trying to change cluster for 2008 and have trouble with turn signals on it ) and some overheating message. I hope change of not working 3d0937049m Onboard supply control unit will solve problem.
And i was thinking of usinf quickshift 6 gear firmware on mine to upgrade it that way, but im not shure will it work without dome changes i nECU, and nobody does, as i suppose(
