Hello @robob ,
EDIT below.

Ok, the engine was running.

Yes, I understand that the units are different, my purpose was to show that a failing unit while installed in the vehicle, worked when it was tested on the bench, that led to the issue being another item in the vehicle causing the fault, like the NAV disc drive, but... read on.

As to unplugging the NAV drive, well, as it didn't scan, and I now realize the difference, or at least I believe I do...
I believe that you have no navigation disc drive in your glove box, and I see now by researching scans from first generation GT/FS vehicles, that they have switched things around a bit when it comes to the Infotainment control head as a "ZAB - COCKPIT" unit for the 2003 to 2011/12, to a "RNS" system for the second generation GT/FS, whereas the main part number of the first generation control head (07) now basically goes to the navigation (37), which in fact in the RNS itself, the "RNS" being the Radio Navigation System, which is the whole infotainment head unit itself, as now the RNS has a HDD installed to store Navi maps, along with an SD card slot on front, so being that you could not scan (37), points to an issue, so, have you done a full auto scan to see if it connects ?

Also, do all of the HVAC buttons and temp displays light up and function ?

From what I see, this is like a RNS 810 from the Phaeton, even the Pheaton has the model number 3D0 907 048, but the buttons are located differently between the VW and the Bentley, and the Bentley has not "Setup" button as the 510, 810, and 850 do, even my 2010 unit has a setup button, with the setup button on the other vw vehicles, you hold that button for 10 seconds or so, and the screen displays all kinds of information as to sw version and fw version, plus much more, it makes me wonder if one of the buttons on you unit would function in the same way, as the first generation head units have a series of button pushes to show the same, so if anyone reading this knows how for the second generation, please share.

Let's see what a full auto scan shows.

I have been conversing with one guy on repairing these units, but $$$$.$$

And I watched a video of a RNS 810 being updated, but that was for a vw, and the exact installed sw and fw must be known before ordering the disc for updates, there has to be one for the Bentley unit, although the guy I was messaging said it was not only sw, but hw also, so most likely a failing hard drive, yet the video of the vw had the same issue as you, he said it would work sometimes, then come out the next day and failure, the update cured his problems.

I will search for the Bentley update disc.

Johnny

.

EDIT:
I found this on ebay, it's a refurbished unit, and the picture shows it going through the update process, so I asked if this SW, FW, HDD, GATEWAY, HOST update is available.

This is a Bentley unit.

Hello @robob ,
I have been messaging with a seller, and I believe that this is what is needed, but they have blurred out the part numbers, and as the disc shows that it is for vehicles in China, I am waiting on an answer to a NAR version, I will keep searching.

EDIT: I found out that the "CAR" button on the Bentley is as the setup button on the VW versions, press and hold for 5 seconds or more.

So, when the unit is working, press the CAR button and hold, then write down the information as explained in my next post.

Just have to keep searching Google with the right terminology to get answers..

@robob ,
So much for Bentley dealerships claiming it's a non known issue, I just found two versions of tsb's for 2012/13, and 2013.5 to 2015 MY.

As stated above, I figured that one of the buttons on the Bentley unit had to act like the setup button on the VW versions, and it is the "CAR" button that you will hold down for 5 seconds or so to get to the "Radio Service Mode", then into the "Version Info" tab.

See technical service bulletin below and or pdf attached.
The part number for the NAR update disc is as shown "WT10340".

Hopefully a full auto scan will show the proper RNS head unit part number as being a G or L of the 3W0 035 017.

I am going back to sleep, 4 AM...

Wow

Really good info!
Thanks Bunches.

The navigation worked when the infotainment system worked. The system hasn't worked for over a week now. I did use the CAR button to make system settings when it worked.

Going to do a full scan now and then hold the CAR button in to see if it will display anything.

Hope you are resting well:-)

Hello Again,

I forgot to answer a question again. Yes, the climate controls light up and work. The AC blows COLD.

Did the Autoscan and it gets stuck on trying address 03. Will upload screenshots later.

Thanks,
Robert

Some pics:

This is what the stuck on address 03 looks like:

Since diconnecting and reconnecting the big battery on some startups I get ABS and traction control warnings. Pressing the traction control button does nothing. This happened this morning prior to my scan.

Thanks,
Robert

Hello @robob ,
Are you constantly disconnecting the house battery for some reason ?
The ABS and TC light will do this upon the battery being disconnected, or low battery power, the lights should go off in a few hundred feet of driving, maybe drive the car and try a re-scan.

Do you have a laptop to use vs the mobile app on your phone, this way it would be a hard wired connection to the OBD port.

Did you call RT as to the "ASAM data" and "AP mode", I have never seen either of those when scanning.

Did the disconnect once last week. The ABS and traction control warnings have been intermittent since. Drove the car 50 miles or more Sunday.

I have ordered a Dell laptop with Windows 11. All my current laptops are Macs.

I have not called RT, but will.

Take it EZ,
Robert

Apologies,

I think I forgot to mention that the functions to the right of the Start/Stop button do not work when the infotainment system is not working. No shock adjust, no height adjust, etc. Above the Start/Stop the electronic parking brake lever does work.

:-)
PS: I am going back out to the car and call RT.

Howdy Folks,

So RT had me do a hard reset as the SD error was indicating a write error and the other error was due to no Internet connection and info files needed.. Booted my big Mac into Windows and installed/launched VCDS with the Hex-Net connected. Held the red button for 60 sec and it reset. Did the updates and now no more errors. Still hangs at 03 on the autoscan.

Shut the car off, then restarted and the ABS and traction control errors went off. Drove it few blocks. Parked it in order to move another car that was in it's spot. Started it up and the ABS and traction control errors were back. Accidentally discovered that a partial press on the Start/Stop button with the car running clears the errors. Or it least did that time. Will try that again to confirm.

Interesting that it still hangs at 03..

Y'all hang in there,
Robert

@robob ,
It is odd that it is hanging on (03) ABS, I just had a 42 minute phone call with Dana at Ross 🫠.

What happens if you try to connect to (03) directly, instead of auto scan.

You are now using the laptop (mac) running in windows to scan the vehicle with the hardwire cable hooked up between the laptop and the RT VCDS dongle, correct, not the cell phone in mobile ?

And just for clarification, as I didn't see a response, you have no navigation disc drive in your glove box, correct ?

I will try 03 directly, good idea.

No, on the laptop. I used my Mac Pro desktop booted to Windows to reset and update the Hex-Net via USB. My Windows laptop should be here between now and the end of the month. Once reset and updated I used the Hex-Net with VCDS Mobile in the car.

Apologies, missed that question. In the glovebox I have the box to which one can connect a device. Nothing is connected there. Then there is also a trap door that opens downward. Otherwise, I am not sure for which I should look.

Thanks for the continued help,
Robert

Hello @robob ,
Sorry for the late response, long day of lawyers, engineers, and water company blank blank.

As to the hanging of the "VCDS - Mobile", yes, that is an issue, I would have thought that Ross-Tech would have fixed this issue, as we discussed it 6 or 7 months ago, and we were talking about upcoming updates, but in my 42 minute conversation with Dana of RT, it appears that the Bentley itself may be the issue with the mobile cable-less side of VCDS, as my 2005/06/07/10/11/14 rebuilt W12 GT hangs right at the very beginning, I thought it was just me, and maybe because I used parts from all the years noted above, they had thought back then (6 or so months ago) that it may have to due with the twin ecu's, but I explained then that my 2005 A8L W12 with twin ecu's has no issue scanning a full auto scan with just the cellphone and the dongle via Wi-Fi, Dana started explaining the same thing last night, but I informed her of the same, and to prove to myself just minutes ago, I went out and did a full auto scan with just the cellphone and dongle via Wi-Fi on my 05 A8L W12 using VCDS-Mobile on the phone, it didn't hang at all, and to be honest, it scanned quickly and accurately, didn't miss any items.

So, as touched on above, Dana thinks that the Bentley is causing the issue with mobile auto scan, because my GT as does your GT3-R, still uses K-line along with CAN BUS / UDS, so her thinking was that the mobile version can not start on one protocol then switch to another, then back to the original protocol, I kind of understand what Dana is saying, but then that doesn't explain why my mobile auto scan hangs right at the very beginning on the Bentley, I get "0% progress", 9 out of 10 times, I just tried the auto scan again on my GT, and I always get "CAN-Failed", which I understand, as the Bentley doesn't have a stand alone separate CAN BUS Gateway module as the Audi A8L does, so, I have to go into "Manual Chassis Select", then pick "other' then "Bentley", then it gives the module list, its all there, then either most of the time when it starts to scan, it says, "trying address 01", then freezes, or it will scan 01, and try "02", but within seconds, the "Trying 02" message disappears and it just freezes, so, how does your auto scan behave from first pressing Auto Scan ?

And what I really find annoying is, that even trying to access 01, 11, for the engine separately along with some other modules, the VCDS mobile gives the message "CAN FAILED", but if I close the program and restart, sometimes it will work, it will catch the k-line/ KW2000 and then scan 01 or 11, other times, I have to use (31) "engine other" to clear faults of both ecu's, as 31 sees both simultaneously, otherwise, everything works as it should with the laptop either wireless or cable connection, but in reality, why did I pay $600 plus for the mobile version, I thought it was to do all, as it does on the audi, and not having to carry a laptop around, maybe there should be a disclaimer about the mobile version capabilities on Bentley... I am also not happy now to hear from Dana that the "mobile version has been on the back burner, and it still is in beta"... nine to eleven years later or so.

Let us know how your VCDS-Mobile behaves.

Sorry for the long rant...

Johnny

Loved the rant!

I was in and out of the car most of the day yesterday and the infotainment worked all day. Remember, prior to this it hadn't worked in a week and a half. It was about 5 degrees cooler in the morning, but at my next to last stop it was near or at 100 degrees. Of course the AC had been running so it was cooler in the car even when parked as I was not inside long at that stop. Twice it took about a mile for it to come on.

Scanning 03 manually this morning caused a hang even with the system working. Autoscan goes 1 then 2 then hangs on 3. ABS light went off while I was watching it but cam back on when I started to scan 03. ABS light was not on during my running around yesterday.

The laptop has shipped and is scheduled to be here Friday, but the tracking shows it still in Ontario.

Additionally, the SAT radio pauses for a few seconds once in a while even if not under a bridge. My other two cars that have it don't do that.

What else can I tell you folks?

Infotainment versions:

Thanks Much,
Robert
