Trade in my M6 on a Nissan GT-R?
SubscribeOK guys... I need a little help here. I bought a 2008 convertible BMW M6 about a month ago for $49,000. It's in excellent flawless condition with 40,000 miles and 1 year remaining on it's factory warranty. I commute 150 miles daily and am actually using it as my commuter car. I must admit though that I'm not very impressed by it. It's fast but not nearly as fast as I expected it to be.
I just found a 2009 Nissan GT-R with only 14,000 miles in super silver color for $69,000. It's loaded with a Cobb AccessPort tuner included. The warranty has just expired but the dealership is willing to extend it 2 years/40,000 miles. It also has brand new tires on it (my BMW needs new tires at $1800). They will give me the $49,000 I paid for the M6 so I'm looking at a $20,000 difference to switch to the GT-R.
I know the GT-R is faster and highly customizable compared with the M6. I also know it's a matter of taste here. I'm not a huge convertible fan but must admit it's nice driving with the top down here in Florida from time to time.
Can someone please help me with this decision?? Has anyone had both and what are your views. I'll likely put around 80,000 miles on either over the next 2 years. What would you do?? Thanks

I've driven an M6 for a few weeks (while in Cali), but I couldn't wait to get back home in my GT-R.
The M6 has loads of instant torque, and is a lot more comfortable as a ride, but the GT-R is just more exciting (for me) to drive.
It comes down to personal preference. Try the GT-R out for a bit (extended test drive). They are quite different cars with different goals.
The thing I prefer between the M6 and GT-R, is that I can use more of GT-R more often than I ever could in the M6.

I think the key to this decision will be whether or not you can tolerate the suspension in the GTR driving it that many miles a day. Personally I can no longer tolerate a brick-like suspension at my age any more but if your the type who can then you'll have one screamin' machine. As jasper noted, an extended test drive on various roads - or perhaps your commute would be in order here. Luckily you're in FL and the roads are pretty decent down there compared with the northern states. Perhaps the other thing to consider with such a fast car is your ability to avoid confrontations with the boys in blue - I don't imagine you'll be doing the speed limit very often in that beast!
Yeah the roads are smooth on my commute. All interstate miles. I'm also not really a fast driver. I just love the take-off and knowing what a car can do if I want it to. I have an Aston Martin V8 Vantage also for weekend driving. It has less HP than the BMW but is much more responsive and faster. The BMW always feels like I'm dragging a weight behind it. The BMW also doesn't have satellite radio which I know sounds dumb, but with the driving I do, it's sure nice. Aftermarket installs are never as nice. I guess what it comes down to is losing the convertible, $20,000 and the prestige of the M6 for the looks, speed and customization abilities of the Nissan.
It the Nissan reliable? I've never owned one. Had a Honda for a bit and it was ultra reliable, although ugly and slow.
Thanks guys.

I've owned mine for almost 3 1/2 years without any issues (except for minor adjustments, and TSB's that come out from time to time).Originally Posted by facialcrunch

Really? One of the biggest gripes (myself included) about the S85 was the lack of torque. It was a slug off the line.Originally Posted by jaspergtr

M6 is looking a bit long in the tooth. Performance wise, obviously the GT-R just kills it. But if everyday cruising with the top down is your preference, then get the BMW.
Agree on the torque. Maybe you bought a Dinan stroked one without knowing.
You will love the GTR

Thanks for the info guys! this forum is great. No offense to the M6 lovers, but I really don't see what all the fuss is about. Two weeks with it is enough for me. Trading it for the GT-R Monday

Nissan really???

lol! I meant while already driving... I enjoyed the lower RPM grunt of the V10, and the constant pull in higher RPMs. Off the line, I agree, it feels like a slug.Originally Posted by bonehead

my m6 is a 6 speed but I can say it has no torque until at least 5k.But 5k to 8200 sure is fun.
To be honest it took me a few months to really appreciate the car as a daily but it does many things very well.
The top is super quiet when up and with the smart top mod it's awesome
For that commute the mileage will be more annoying than anything.
I get 200 miles per tank typically with 80% highway
