What do you all think of a Nissan 370z nismo vs an 06,07 cayman s? I've got 40g's left after I paid for my wedding and I'm looking to spend it on a cayman s, however i recently discovered the 370z nismo. For what I'll spend on an 06,07 cayman s I can get a brand new nismo Z. I value all of your opinions and input. I'm trying to consider reliability, cost of ownership and of course performance.

 

Congrats on getting married. Have you considered a 2001-02 996 turbo?

My buddy just picked up an 03 turbo for 35k and it's incredible, but I'm afraid that if anything goes wrong with the turbo then it'll cost a small fortune for any repairs. I'd like to not worry about any expensive repairs popping up. That's why i'm considering a new nismo z. 382 hrsp and new car reliabilty

Obviously a test drive of both is in order... assuming you've never driven a Cayman, you'll be AMAZED how good it feels on the road.

I've heard that the clutch/gear shift of the nissans/infinitis is kinda weak, so that is the only thing I'd really be looking at... Some guys complain about the length of "throw" of the shifter in the Cayman too...

The Nismo is nice, but the Cayman S is pretty exclusive at this point.

I definitely understand the "new" vs. "used" tho... good luck w/ your decision

 

I had an 09 370Z for about 3 months. Took it to Mid-Ohio and after 6 laps it went into limp mode due to oil temps. The Nizmo, to the best of my knowledge, suffers from the same oil temp problem.

On the flip side, I took my 09 CS with PDK to Putnam Park for 3 days with absolutely zero problems.

 

I had owned 2 350Zs before my Boxster, and the Boxster was just a lot more fun and better built than the Zs. It's more of a driver's car and just feel so much more exciting to drive.
I'd go and test drive both and see for yourself.
But of course you'll have to spend a little more on maintenance, but test drive both and decide whether you can justify the difference on maintenance.

 

I've owned my 2004 for a year with 20k Km on it the only unscheduled maintenance I paid was a set of front parking lights which cost $20 each and they're on all the time since mine's a Canadian car. What you often hear when people spend $ to fix their Pcar is usually a car that's got miles or it has not been properly taken care of by previous owners.

Nissan is Japanese but their reliability is nowhere on the same level as Toyota (or even Honda). They've built some ****ty cars (Altima, Sentra) so even though their parts are cheaper doesn't mean you don't have to replace them less often than a Porsche.

 

Thank you everyone. I've have driven both and I think the cayman is a much better car. Also I'm kind of bias to the mid engine. My last toy was a 91 nsx which is where is get that mid engine bias from. That thing handled increadible. I'm going to continue my quest to find my perfect certified cayman s. Plenty of cars to choose from nowadays. I justed put a deposit on a 2008 Boxster S (never titled) with <50 miles on the clock for just a click over 30% off the SRP. Granted, I've only got 3 yrs of warranty left on the car, this thing is brand new. Look around. Some dealers will work with you if you are serious in buying now, esp. in today's economy. GL!

 

IMHO do your due diligence/research and know what to expect from the Gen I Cayman S.

If you goal is to only drive the car on the street the stock Cayman S is more than capable of doing so as it comes from the factory, however if you decide to track the car in the future there are well known issues that you should be aware of that need to be addressed.

Having owned a 97 NA2 myself I can say that you won't be dissapointed with the Cayman for the most part with the possible exception of the shifter and the lack of a LSD.

A Gen I Cayman S with a LSD/TBD will surpass the handling of a NA1 NSX.
