Buying Questions: Best Years? CPO?
Buying Questions: Best Years? CPO?
Hi, I may be starting to look for a good used Boxster S soon. I would like to stay around $30k. Since I've owned a couple of Porsches in the past (968 & 944 Turbo) I'm thinking I really want a CPO car.
Having said all that, I have a few of questions:
How much more am I going to pay for a CPO car vs. a non-CPO car?
Are there any specific model years I should be wary of? Any I should look for?
When did they change the Boxster styling a bit? I know it was a 986, then what came after that?
Honestly I might prefer a Cayman S, but I don't think I can find one in my price.
Thanks.

CPO typically tacks on about $2500.
986 model was built from 1997-2004. 987 came along in 2005.
For your $30k budget, you're probably looking at something in the 2004-2005 range. So, it's up to you which style you like.

look at ebay motors and search through their completed auctions. The ones that actually sold are in green. it will give you an idea of what they are really going for. Try the link below, you may have to log into ebay to see completed auctions. Be forewarned that 90% of all ebay boxster auctions never sell. But you can look at the buy it now prices to see what the sellers thought their car was worth.

Here is another link for different models.

I would start at least 2003, You may be able to find a great deal with very low miles and save a fortune. You also get a real back window, the plastic ones suck and will eventually need to be replaced. Plus you can always use the extra money to mod the heck out of it. Trust me, the thought will cross your mind.

Thanks for the great info, guys. Yes, mods have already come to mind!!
Does anyone know if it's possible to get the CPO on a car that I buy from an individual? Basically, can I buy an extended Porsche warranty from Porsche.

For $30K, you can easily find something in the '05 MY. If luck is with you, you might be able to find something in the '06 MY. I would suggest 2005 or newer over the 2004 or older models. Reason being the '03-'04 MY comes with the 3.2 258 hp whereas the '05-'06 MY comes with the 3.2 280 hp. Significant improvements were also made to the '05-'06 MY, as well as styling changes.
I'm also in the market for a '05-'06 Boxster S. I've seen prices range from $28K to as high as $38K depending on options and mileage.
Gook luck with your search!

The only other option for a longer warranty is an aftermarket one, which is not always the best way to go.
You will find it extremely hard, if not impossible, to get a car CPO'd after you buy it from someone other than a dealer. So unless you buy it from a dealer you will not get it, unless you find someone like me that bought the car new and got Porsche to CPO it: my '08 Boxster S that I bought new in Feb. 2008 is CPO'd so the warranty is now good until Feb. 2014 or 100k miles...it is for sale in the classifieds here.

CPO is always worth considering
True story: a friend went home and bought an '04 Boxster S after visiting with us and driving my '02 S ... I suggested CPO, which he did ... 3 weeks after buying his, he smelled coolant & engine started running rough. He pulls over, shuts it down ... towed to dealer. They installed a whole new motor - no charge.
I never had anything that bad on mine, but certainly used the hell out of my extended warranty.
My 0.02 cents
