SCHNELL Short Throw Shifter...Picture Thread

This is for the guys that may not have taken a short throw shifter as serious as should be taken. IMHO, these cars really are lacking in the stock shifter dept. The 100 yard throws are ridiculous for an enthusiasts automobile!

I just installed my SCHNELL short throw (myself) this morning. A few hand tools, some great oldies on the radio and about an hour and a half of patience, and an AMAZING transformation!! In a word: AWESOME! Generally speaking, I install a short shifter in all of my cars. My other car (BMW 135i coupe) was also in dyer need of a shorty....it transformed that car too.

The SCHNELL is not only a shorter (30%) throw...but the lever is also reconfigured to move the **** considerably closer to the drivers right leg. That alone is a huge improvement over stock for someone that really enjoys rowing thru the gears!

Well....here are the pics I promised: I will start from left to right with, neutral, first, second, third, fourth, then 'R'. You will be able to see how drastically the lever changes in the reverse shot. I decided not to take 5 and 6 only because you get the point.

Enjoy guys! EDIT- Oh yeah...this is a 2001 Boxster 'S'.

So does it tighten up the feel of the shifter from side to side play? Also does it work on a Cayman S 06? any input on feel would be appreciated. Thanks

LEETHL- sorry so late gett'n back to ya...

NO MORE PLAY, or SLOP! This is a wonderful upgrade that not only tightens up the slop (stick in a bucket of oatmeal feel), but moves the lever, as you can see in my photos, near and dear to your right leg, and back further to your right hand. Now, my car only has 14k on the ticker...but, the stock lever was definitely sloppy. The stock lever is made outta plastic and shytty steel with plastic 'wobbly' bushings. This new lever is CNC'd aluminum and stainless steel with CNC'd aluminum bushings. ALSO- the bushings have built in adjustment screws for month to month / year to year re-tightening...if needed?

Here is the new lever and a shot of the old turd! I went and dug out of the dump can to snap a shot for you. Sad really...this excuse for a shift lever comes stock in these 'high performance' cars!?

Oh, as far as fitment goes, yes they have one for your car. See: www.vertexauto.com

Cheers, Chris Hall (BIKEBOY)

Thank you BikeBoy for the quick response. I am going to have to pick up one of these quickly. Just seen as of late everyone going with the more expensive Porsche SSK so a little confused as to that but this helps. Thanks again. Lee

I picked up one on Ebay for about $60 about a month ago. I believe its a Schnell "copy" and had it installed last week. Just like the photos that Bikeboy posted, mine is also tilted to the drivers side when its on Neutral. Just gotta get used to it. I do have some play on mine but will see about tightening up the side to side play. Overall, the throw is short, but just have to get used to the tilt towards the drivers side.

My buddy who has a 997 S has the B&M and his is centered straight like the stock shifter and less notchy. I'm not sure which one is better but I think its more of personal preference.

shifterkart-
If it's an exact replica...there are adjustments for ALL of the play to be eliminated. If you didn't install yourself, they may not have sufficiently tightened both end bushings?

Just say'n...

Just another FYI fellas......

See'n as I did the install myself, and am pretty mechanically adept... I thought I would explain the play...fore and aft, versus side to side.

If you have side to side play, that is due to the shifter cables 'mal-adjustment' if the play is fore and aft...that is due to the adjustable bushings not being tight enough. If you have fore and aft play with a stock shifter, then your plastic bushings are worn out and there is NO adjustment for those. IMHO, the new location of the shift lever is more in line with 'most' other cars in the sporting world. The new location is MUCH more usable and ergonomic for speed shifting.

Hope this all helps?

Cool! Thanks man! I will definitely take a look at that adjustment. It is the side to side play. My buddy with the 997 installed it for me so we'll both take a look at it over the weekend.

Thanks for the advice!!!
