Boxster S Winter

Hi folks,
I am looking at a fairly new PCar. I was originally thinking about getting the new 991 but after reading the reviews on the new BoxsterS I am seriously considering it. Mainly b/c the reviews are so good, its looks really nice AND I can save $30k from the base 991. I have never owned a convertible before and with the Canadian winter not sure how it (meaning I) will hold up..I should clarify that I do not plan on driving it in the dead of winter (end of Dec to end of March) here in Toronto. I would however consider driving it into Dec. At the moment it has become pretty cold quick, so about -1 Celsius with wind chill (Canadian's know what that means ) so if someone can provide some feedback I would appreciate it....Meaning driving it with the top up.

Now this may sound like a NEWBIE question but forgive my ignorance..how windy and noisey is a convertible on the highway

Comments, please and thx!

They are fine and many in Canada, Northeast US and even here in the Mountain West drive throughout the Winter. I drive mine when it's clear and moderately warm. The cars, after all, are designed and manufactured in Germany.

Not only are they fine throughout the colder months, if it's calm and sunny, I'll even drive mine with the top down at -1C. The heated seats option is good to have, and there is also a heated steering wheel option available, but I skipped that option. The hvac vents are positioned and adjustable such that you can aim one at each of your hands to keep them warm if necessary.

Sound insulation with the top up, which was already good in the 987 Boxster, is nicely improved in the new Boxster, and climate insulation is excellent as well. I've had no problems remaining cool at 100 degrees (F) or warm at temperatures approaching freezing (haven't seen the really cold stuff here yet). The car has very solid AC and heating systems.

I don't drive mine in snow, but I would think that they'd do very well with a good set of winter tires and the PTV option.

oakville doesn't even get a winter!

snow tires for the cold temperature though - under 5 degrees these summer rated tires lose a lot of grip.

My 02 Boxster has the lined roof (1st year this showed up in the base model IIRC) and with the top up my 02 Boxster is quieter than my 03 Turbo. The Turbo is not helped by its 18" tires/wheels vs. the 17" tires/wheels on the Boxster. Being a roadster the Boxster is more softly sprung too which helps.

I have driven the Boxster quite long distances in one day and in comfort and ending the day without having been assailed by wind/road noise the whole time.

But you need to drive examples of both cars to determine if the Boxster's road/wind noise is acceptable to you.

search the old Canadian driver web page - there is a story from about 2006 or so where one of the writers had a Boxster for a week in an Ottawa winter. the jist of the story was that it was a very good machine in all the weather until a freezing rain storm made opening the doors a little hard.

I just did this last winter in Minnesota - bought an e93 M3 (convertible) - so I can't speak for p-cars, but I can talk experience.

Prior to that I'd been driving awd Audis and running snow tires on them in the winter. Best tires I've used are Nokian RSi/WRG2s - they're a great match for snow, slush, ice with stretches of warmth and they're durable (50k treadwear warranty I think)

For my M3 I was wanted more of a dry performance bias so I went with Vredestein Wintrac Xtremes. These things are TOUGH! they will last and they are a great performance winter tire, just don't expect them to be like Nokians.

If you have rwd pre-traction-control experience they'll do just fine though: they'll get you up a steep hill covered with 3" of snow ... but you're going to have to work for it

Anyway, I'd say go it, just buy some nokians and winter wheels.
