Difference in 2008 vs 2009 Cayman S performance?

Assuming everything else the same on both cars, with 6 speed stick and same 19" tires, etc. What is difference in quarter mile and 0-60 times between these two cars (295 hp vs 320 hp, factory original in all respects)?

Other than the direct injection of later cars, what else makes a real difference in the two? I know someone who is looking to buy tomorrow, and wanted your input so I can advise her. Are the 2009 and later model enough different that she would make a mistake in chosing the less expensive '08 vs the '09 and later cars? Thanks!!!

Performance numbers aside (I'm sure '09 is a little quicker than the '08), the biggest difference between these two years is in the engine design. Besides DFI, '09+ models don't have the IMS (intermediate shaft) bearings, which can be problematic. So if the '09 model is within your budget, I'd choose it for more peace of mind.

I would get the '09 without hesitation. Improved engine design makes a big difference in reliability and performance.

Main difference, as stated is first year going to the DFI engine. You might see .1 or .2 difference, at most in acceleration times. Driver capability is more of a differential than what the 25 hp would bring. By 2008 (in fact earlier) if memory serves, the IMS issue was largely a moot point. You might also check on the first year DFI engine for any issues. If memory servers there were a few issues with early 2009 engines. Just do a search to see if anything turns up. Net net..........not sure the 25 hp or IMS should necessarily be the deciding factor either way. More likely, it is the deal you can get, the car closest to your spec, etc. Of course, like others' input, all this is just our collective opinions. Your own research may serve at least as well as anthing any of us can offer. I had an 08 CS that I bought new and drove for 28,000 miles before trading for SM_ATL's 2012 Cayman R which I have driven for 6,500 miles on top of the 5,800 Serge had driven. The DFI engine has been a delight. It is 35hp more than what my 08 had. Can I feel the difference? A bit but I feel the handling, ride, limited slip capability more than the acceleration, per se.

I believe the 09 over the 08 is .3 faster in the 0 to 60 testing the 2008 is 5.1 seconds and the 2009 is 4.8 seconds

That is what is published. Like I said previously variability in a driver can account for more than that..........

I agree w/ Ron's initial post. I think it boils down to which car you can find w/the right specs, and how good of a deal you can make.

I'd probably try to get the '09, although the first gen of anything bothers me a little...on the other hand, don't be afraid of the IMS issue in the 987.1 cars (way overblown from what I read).

Thanks for all your replies. She finally felt comfortable in deciding on the one she liked better. It was a little cheaper, but not much. She picked the '08 Cayman S. It is really nice, as was the other car. You and this site were very helpful, guys. Thanks again.

Sorry, I’m late to the party!
I have an ’09 and love it. I have had no problems whatsoever, and would recommend it without hesitation.
However, if the car is never going to see the track, and be a daily driver street car, then the cheaper ’08 with the right options would be a smart choice.
I hope she enjoys it.

Our '09 Cayman S has had zero issues in it's 14k miles of use. As I said previously, I think the difference in performance is detectable and going with an '09 an easy decision IMO. I have to acknowledge that our car has PDK which contributes to the improved performance (PDK was not available in the earlier generation). I also had a bad experience with the old engine architecture ('01 C2 engine failure) which made me unwilling to purchase anything without the Mezger engine (turbo or GT3) or DFI engine.
