Why?

With such competent mid engine designs like the Cayman and the Boxster, why would anyone buy a "retro" rear engine 997? They just seem so..... backwards.

classic design and more power. a mid engine 911 would be the best car ever....
it does not hurt to dream..

I have to agree with Jeremy Clarkson about the purpose of the cayman. It's price, specs all between the Boxster and the 911, a marketting scheme.
The car was not made to be the best it could be. As some people have done already, put the 911 powerplantant and you have a dream machine.

At least when you overcook the turn and have an "off" in an Audi you can see what you might be getting ready to hit!

911 driving is more involved. Cayman suffers too much understeer in my own taste. Other reasons, 4wd, 4 seats.

But I like the Boxster a lot, for 40k less than its counterpart 911 cab I take the Box.

They are both great cars. Think about it; if it were'nt fot the 911, we wouldn't ever have the Cayman/Boxster to begin with. I love my 997, can't get enough of it.

That being said, my next car will be a Cayman w/DSG :!

.. and if it weren't for Porsche's early production vehicles (mid engine) .. we wouldn't have 911's.. this is the mother of all parodies.

When I say "they just seem so...." I assumed you knew that I was stating my preference. The reason I asked the question was to understand the reasoning of the ones that do prefer the 911. Wow, didn't think I would need to explain that, sheesh.

If more involved means cross learning to stick your foot into the throttle when all the physics gods wantt you to back out of a too-hot corner, then you can have involved, TTO and the concommitant 360s that follow.
