Short Throw Shifter - Still Looking
Short Throw Shifter - Still Looking
Has anyone found a short throw shifter for the 6 speed in the 957? It really needs one. Maybe one of the vendors can find one for us or find a way to modify one for a different model to get it to work in the 957.
The throws in my 958 are decent. Not long at all. Maybe you can use the shifter from the 958?? I know 996'ers use 997 shifters as a shorter throw option. Good luck!

Thanks. That's a great idea. Anyone know if the manual tranny is the same for the 2009 and 2011 6 speeds? If so, and if the throw is shorter in the 2011, I might have to try swaping the shifter from a 2011 into my 2009.
I made my own, I thought the factory shifter was both to high and to long, so I had a custom clamp fit shift **** made (Audi Clamp style works) and cut 2 inches from the shift leveler then ground off the wings. It now shifts smother then before an is a perfect fit. I did use a 2lbs weights **** though.
I can go into details and since in final pics if your interested.

Yes, very interested. Any details and pics would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.
there's something different. Even visually, you can tell that the gear box is tighter. Are you sure that all of the part numbers are the same? I'd be suprised.

Paul,
Sorry for the delay, i managed to get sick last week.
So first I want to say I like short, really short/low shifters, so you might not want to go this low, and second shortening the shifter make the useless cup holders even more useless.
I am assuming, that the top of the center counsel is removed. The shift **** was stuck so I had to cut off the shift ****, so i can't speak to how to correctly remove it, but it requires a lot of pulling an from what i hear a catches mask to protect the face.
Once the shift **** is remove everything else is ease.
Here is a link tot he shift know I purchased, but any Audi clamp style should work:

Once the shift **** is remove everything else is ease.
- Ensure the parking brake is on.
- Determine the height you want the shift **** to be, the shorter the height the shorter the throw, but the notchier it will feel.
- Remove the 4 bolts holding the shifter assembly in place.
- Place shifter in neutral
- Lift out the assembly and unclip the 2 connectors attached to the shifting cables, the assembly will com out but its a tight fit and requires twisting and turning.
- Determine where to cut off shifter shaft, rememeber to remove extra to account for the height added by the shift ****. I use a hacksaw to do this step.
- Now to remove what is left of the wings, I did this with a bentch grinder. To ensure that nothing is damaged i did the following:
- Wrapped the assembly in a plastic trash bad an taped it closed. I wanted to ensure no filings got into the housing.
- I then got a 5 gallon pail and filled it with water so that I could cool the shifter's shaft.
- While grinding I kept my hand on the shaft at all times, so that i would know as it started to get warm, i did not want to damage the plastic housing so i cooled it often.
- Once the wings are removed, I tested the fit of the shift know and continued grinding until the shift **** fit.
- I then smoothed things out with a file

Mucho rep points, havent seen such an inventive clear concise and unique mod.....I have an automatic but you did an awesome job.
i have had a manual cayenne now for 3 years and i had the chance to shift a new 2012 cayenne.
wow - what a difference in throw length; really surprising - 2nd to 3rd has to be shorter by a third almost. the shift **** also blows the 955 manual ****
the boot is smaller so no simple buy and swap; but if you could swap out the mechanicals it would be a no brainer for any 955 owner
