I think all records/maintenance, whether they were done at a dealer, indy, or yourself are important.

If you can do the work yourself, by all means do it. For example; dealer quoted $3k to do a full brake job on my GTS. I did it myself for $1100 in parts and 4 hours of my time. There's plenty of resources online to help anyone handy do most routine maintenance on their cars; sometimes you need a special tool or two, but otherwise if you follow the basics you'll be fine. I grew up doing oil changes, brake jobs and most other routine maintenance on my cars. As I got older I did get lazier, but if I'll save a considerable amount of money by doing the work myself, I will..

I still believe in taking my car to the dealer once a year for annual maintenance and a "once-over" to catch anything that I would miss. Keep all records to show the work was done.

Dealer was going to charge me $640 for Oil Change, Oil Filter, and Air Filter.

Took it too a Porsche Indy shop, and got everything done for $220. I will take that $440, and play two rounds of golf at Pebble Beach for "free".

Im new here, but I see both sides as valid.

Yes, records are important to some, but what good are those records when you hand them the stack and its full of jiffy lube receipts?

Also, I don't think anything would have been brought up if you didn't mention possibly the worst place to take your car. There are way to many horror stories from that place on average cars. I honestly get my oil and filters from the same place, but I change my own oil and go dispose of the old at the nearest autoparts store. It takes 5 minutes to dump in their tank.

I know to many people that have had horrible experiences with every mechanic shop so I have been doing my own work for decades.

I was once ***** deep into a transmission rebuild when I went to the dealer for a random bearing and to see if I could ask a tech for some pointers.
I was told by the service advisor that they don't rebuild transmissions. They just replace them. I quickly realized that I was the smartest person in the room and have never gone back to the stealership.

To add a cherry on top, as I was leaving, it was around lunch time and the service techs were leaving too. The guy in the clapped out 240sx that peeled out when he left had to have been the chefs kiss on the perfect nightmare for people that think they are getting quality work there than at an independent shop 😂
