My Garage/Workshop Buildup

Hey everyone,

I have been lurking around many different garage forums online for the last couple of years before I started building my own garage/workshop. I got lots of great ideas and advise, so I figured that I would share some of my experiences for people that are in the same boat that I was in a couple of years back.

Before I get started, let me say that I am posting this on a few different sites, so rather then copy and paste the content every time Ill just link to one site that allows me to host images and is free for all to view without even registering.

I am happy to answer questions... so feel free to post them. Ill try to get back here as much as possible, but if you post on the site that hosts the articles you will receive a faster response.

Finally, at this point late Oct, 2007... the project is about 95% complete so you won't have to wait forever to see the final product. I plan to submit a new article ever week until the build up is complete.

So, lets get started....

Part 1 (Introduction)- http://www.club-tc.com/forums/articl...rkshop-part-1/

Part 2 (Moving Earth)- http://www.club-tc.com/forums/articl...rkshop-part-2/

Part 3 (Foundation)- http://www.club-tc.com/forums/articl...rkshop-part-3/

Part 4 (Framing)- http://www.club-tc.com/forums/articl...rkshop-part-4/

Part 5 (Sub-Floor Heating System)- http://www.club-tc.com/forums/articl...rkshop-part-5/

Part 6 (Utility Closet)- http://www.club-tc.com/forums/articl...rkshop-part-6/

... more to come!

Thanks,

-JRW

Looks like a pretty extensive project. Post some blu-prints! Post some current pics. Needless to say, I'll be following this thread!

Ok, I added two more links tonight... Foundation and Framing.

1SIKCAB- This was a huge project that took about 2 full years to complete. Its still only about 95% complete. I don't know how I would scan the blueprints... they are huge, but Ill see what I can do!

Metlica- I will get 1-2 more writeups done per week. Keep checking back.

Thanks,

-JRW

Project looks great so far! Good choice on putting everything under the stairs. Any delays due to the bad weather or did it miss you? Keep us updated.

f1fan5: No delays... actually the garage is about 95% done. Just a few little things to go which is why I am able to give you significant updates every week. The whole project took about 2 years which included the garage, pool, and all the landscaping.

Radiant Heat

Was there a white side and silver (reflective) side of the bubble insulation you put down under the Pex? The reflective side should be up and should also come up the walls about 6-8" until after your pour (you can trim it back later). The idea is to reflect the heat into the slab.

Also, it looks like the room is fairly large. You should consider a remote sensor (in slab or on wall) in addition to your main thermostat. You can then balance the system flow (you should have flow controls on your mainfold blocks) later to maintain an even heat throughout the room. SD

The radiant heat is nice... Wish I had thought of doing that in my garage when my house was being built!

Are you sure that water, sewer, electric, and data are allowed in the same trench? I had to keep them 10 feet apart.
